DIY section has lots of fun projects, read through them. People here might have done things that you want to do.

Probably have to take the whole unit apart. Personally I wouldnt paint it.

How would you take the unit out?

point the vents above the HVAC down, and the grab the lip and pull. It shouldnt take too much force to pop it off. Then youll have the screws and wiring and heater slidier wire to disconnect, according to some other posts in the DIY section...

In the left corner of the passenger floor board is the end of the slider wire. all you have to do is push it up and it disconnects to whatever it is connected to.

...that is of course after you take off all the trim around the stereo and remove the cupholder...those 2 screws hold 3 pieces in place...the radio bezel, cupholder, and HVAC trim. Remove that and do as Shaz mentioned and it'll come right off...put a little pressure from the bottom as well to make it easier.

okay the only trim i have left is the trim around the vents on the left of the wheel and right of the passenger air bag... how do i take those off? and the only way to get the trim around the power window shitches is to remove the entire door panle?

Flat blade screwdriver - they pop out. You might want to heat the plastic trim up though - it is prone to breaking on removal (Subaru didn't design them to be removed after installation).

yeap... so you might as well re-do the door cards while you're at it! :-)

It's really up to you... I did my door cards blue suede to match my seats. I went with a silver/blue theme:

its blue suede fabric I believe he mentioned it above. I planned on doing the same thing and getting the sti seats to match.

Mark: yeah, it's a blue suede like material that I found at a fabric store... closest thing I could find to match the seats. As for the STi mats, the passenger side fits almost perfect, drivers side and rears fit pretty good.

Does that crappy fake wood stuff just pop off? Did you have to use goo done, or the likes to get the glue off?

Wiscon_Mark
03-16-2006, 08:08 AM
no, it pops off. You could use a screwdriver to pop it off from the outside of the door (although it could cause a dent in the plastic, I wouldn't reccomend it) but the best thing to do is take off the door panel (for reference, check the door panel thread in the DIY section) and pop them out from behind, after you've removed the switches from the panel (they just pop out too).

Little tabs hold them on so they pop in and out. Just becareful not to break the tabs when putting them in. On the driver door you actually have to remove that hold piece of the panel that holds the window button trim and the lock button to get the drive side off.
