Having problems with the MAF but needed to get to work...car was having really bad problems with rough idle...noticed smoke under the hood, coming out of the left turbo (which I think is the primary, iirc)...what are the chances I killed it?

Just to confirm, Primary turbo is the one furthest away from the MAF (Passenger side on a RHD car)

could be a small oil leak or anything.
check for simple things first.
any visible oil/ coolant leaks
is there smoke coming from the exhaust?
does the turbo spool up properly?
any strange noises?
is the car making enough power?

now, i am getting the knock sensor code and there is black smoke coming from the exhaust...it was a struggle just getting the car moving forward. no visible oil/coolant leaks, strange noises. i guess i will be taking it to the dealer to see wtf is going on now.

if you've got a knock sensor code then the ECU has probably gone into limp mode.
it's blowing smoke out the exhaust becasue of the reduced timing and unburned fuel blowing out.
reset the ECU to clear the codes and see that it comes back to normal.
