drove over some train tracks in cumberland md today and touched the breaks and went flying out into traffic, with the abs pump wining like crazy
i thought that was only an issue with some imprezas?

That's how my 96 feels like. They tuned mine so sensitive it's ridiculous.

ABS is a funny thing... Sometimes when I still had my ABS, I would hit the crosswalk line and it would make my brake act odd... I fixed it by pulling the ABS fuse and saying "To hell with ABS"!!!! It most likely figured it was slippping more then it thought it was with all the bumps and also inconsistency with brake pressure....
I have also had this problem with my moms old Ford mini van back in the day...
So yeah, I dont have ABS on my GT anymore. I can brake better then the computer anyway. Having the light on is anoying though... haha

its acted up a little before but never to that degree or caused me to fly out in front of a beer trunk...

Train tracks are slippery and big bumps can throw off the speed sensor readings. Why it was still acting up out into traffic is a good question.

I have to get new brake pads soon so I have to push the pedal down pretty hard to come to a stop. If I hit a bump my car starts chattering away...
You have to remember that abs was kinda new on cars back then so our abs modules are pretty down and dirty.

Get that gauge pod out and take the light out!

:-? ABS has been on passenger cars since the early 70s.... :-)

^^ Back to the 60s with the Jensen FF, if you want to get real technical. But I think the 1st gen Legacys are the 1st Subarus to get the technology. Even so, I've felt the 2nd gen's ABS to be inferior, or at least too sensitive, compared to my 1st gen, or my 98 Forester.

I have a love/hate relationship with ABS. It does give one less thing to think about during an emergency stop, but it doesn't really give the shortest shops if you know how to threshold brake, and even on the latest systems, they get really quirky like this on rough roads or unusual conditions. Mine doesn't work after swapping the transmission and I'm not really in a big hurry to fix it.

although abs was invented for airplains in the late 1920s and they found their way to cars in the 60s but it wasnt untill 1971 that Chrysler used a true computerized ABS. but many cars didnt start to get abs till the late 80s. true abs was around in the 70s, but they were mostly in higher model cars.

I don't think many consider RWAL to be 'real ABS'.
First thing I'd recommend doing is check your tire pressure.
Second thing I'd recommend doing is not hauling ass over train tracks while romping the brake. :p
It's really too bad Subaru didn't go Delco Morane ABS VI, that system is awesome.
Also, if you have a wheel speed sensor that is shitting bricks, it can cause your ABS to be way over-sensitive. Those painted crosswalk lines are way slippery, too, and a sensitive ABS system could see a wheel speed reduction just from going over one of those while on the brakes, I suppose... It's too bad that most inexpensive scan tools won't show wheel speed sensor data. Would be helpful for figuring out if you have a bad sensor or not.
Last thing to note, when you are turning, and I have seen this in person, your tires will be turning different speeds. I kid you not, while one of your tires is going 12 mph, the opposite tire may be going 9 mph, if you're at full steering lock. Makes the ABS computer's job harder. So, really, take it easy when going over train tracks that require you to turn while going over them. ;)
