Spring suggestions for bd?

What is a really good lowering spring for a 97 legacy 2.5gt? I have 17" konig tantrums w/ 215-45 tires. The offset sets the tire almost flush with the edge of the wheel wells. So I will need a little bit of gap so it won't rub. I would prefer a fully adjustable suspension, but I am looking at other parts for the car so right now I just want some springs. What are you guys using?

if you were to use Pink STi Springs, it would sit another 15mm lower and handle even better

That looks really good. What bumper is that? Would it sit the same if I just use the sti springs with the gr2 struts that I have?

that gives me some ideas. I like the drop with stock 04 sti struts and springs. I would like a hair lower so I am going to lookm for some sti pink springs to use with my gr2 struts. If that setup gives it a nice stance I will look into some AGX struts. I have actually had coilovers before and have never adjusted the ride height after having it set. so a nice set of springs with adjustable struts would be perfect. The roads where I live are horrible in towns back roads are okay and a stiff setup would be great.

What i've quoted is 02-04 STi springs and struts. given they're more available than BD/BG gear.

I believe the STi struts have higher spring perches and a shorter stroke than the Legacy gear, so STi springs on struts designed for the Legacy may give weird ride-heights.

But if you buy the AGX's to suit the 04 wrx/STi, and use 04 STi springs (pink or black) the heights will be fine.

NOTE: your BD/BG rear top-hats are incompatible with 03-04 STi rear Springs due to their tapered tops.
01-02STi are fine (non-tapered)

there is a specific STi pink lowering spring upgrade for the BD/BG Bilsteins. the bilsteins again have a different perch position and hence spring length than either the normal BD/BG stuff or the STi gear.

it gets very messy when mixing springs and struts from different models.

My philosophy is to choose a spring/ strut/ top-hat combo from the same vehicle that provides the correctr ride height, the right spring rate for the given purpose and the correct strut that will control the spring effectively as well as provide enough travel within itself so it's not riding on the bump-stops.
STi struts ride very close to the bump-stops, so adding much lower springs can cause issues with them riding very harsh on the stoppers all the time

that gives me alot to think about. I really don't want to have to replace anything other than just my springs for now. I am already looking at spending nearly 1500 for a front bumper and some headlights. I am just tired of my tires rubbing. I don't want to go back to stock springs.

or some BD/BG bilsteins for ~$400

couldnt find it but i thoguth i rember seing some thread where there was a vedor trying to set up a group buy on bilsteins either from japan or threw family in germany ill keep hunting for it.

The billies he currently has listed are not suitable for BD/BG as they are for gen3 which have a completely different rear suspension design

I'm a bit disappointed that you say the Sti springs wont work with the bilsteins however. My bilstein setup is coming with the GTB springs.. which I'm sure will be fine.. i just wanted to go a bit lower. Any idea what works with the BD/BG bilstein struts well?

you just need to buy springs that are designed for the JDM, Bilstein equipped variants. (BG5 GT-B)

as pictured above, it shows that Tein, Swift, RS-R, Tanabe all make lowering springs for the Bilsteins as well as Bilstein themselves.

What would be a good spring set to get that will work on my gr2 struts? I really do not need struts. If I can find a good deal on a strut/spring combo that will fit right in without having to get anything else I might go that route, but all I really need is just a set of springs that are lower than stock, but not to low.

^ H&R's will work.. otherwise, theres not many spring options for the BD unless you go to something like the bilsteins, or 04 sti stuff. Your best bet might be to pick up a full set of 04 sti stuff, springs + top hats + struts for cheap. I saw some over on nasioc going for like under $200 for all 4. Thats a wicked deal and they look good to boot!

I'll have to keep my eye out for a set. there is a set of oem sti coilovers for sale on there now I would love to have them, but don't have $1100 for suspension at this time.

So I am thinking about getting the sti coilovers. Before I do does anyone have any experience with them? I want to start checking into stuff like this before I go and buy it from now on. Getting kinda tired of buying parts then discovering that they won't fit unless I also buy a few more parts or do some serious modifying. so I did a little more searching on my own and here is what I found.

STI ADJUSTABLE STRUT/SPRING SUSPENSION KIT - Inverted strut and spring design with variable height adjustment. Includes a 4-position strut damping adjustment on front and rear struts. Strut diameter is increased from 22mm to 39mm on 2.5RS and WRX (equal diameter on the STi model). Springs initially lower body approximately 10mm on 2.5RS and WRX, 20mm on STi model, and may be adjusted an additional 30mm.

They'll do the job.
and a direct bolt-in for the BD/BG

however, confirm the spring rates first, they may be much stiffer than the usual STi spring/ strut and may not be comfortable for daily driving.

Along with coilovers usually needing to be serviced/ re-built more frequently than conventional struts

Yeah.. unless you are using this car for the track.. I wouldn't suggest getting coilovers. Unless you like a REALLY harsh ride.. like.. riding on bricks for daily driving. springs / strut combo is the way to go for daily driving in my mind.

I bought the sti coilovers. The engine is a jdm EJ20 out of a first gen legacy. I have extras to go with it. pm me if you are interested in it.

The coilovers are on. I set them to the heighest setting. I now have about a 3" gap between the tire and fender

Not here to high jack a thread. But I have BD5 and bought some 04 WRX (non-sti) struts and springs. The struts didn't come with the top hats. What will I need in order to get them to work?

the wrx top hats should be the same as your stock ones

the rears you will need to find some 03+ WRX/ STi or Gen1 Series 1 Legacy top-hats
