View Full Version : 2.25" exhaust with a 2.5" muffler?

Would that be stupid/a problem with flow? There is just not a lot of 2.25" mufflers. Im planning on a 2.25" cat-back with either a glass-pack or a vibrant 2.25" 18" resonator and probably a vibrant muffler i have looked at cheaper mufflers but i want strait through and i don't want junk.

why are you set on 2.25" and not 2.5"

just curious..

2.5" is too big for these engines?

this is a GREAT straight through muffler that is definitely not junk and it would go perfectly with 2.25 piping. they have lots of tips for this muffler but this style is my personal favorite!

^^^^^Is Race better than normal? Not to loud? Yeah thats my favorite too but I only have about $250 bucks for my exhaust and I don't wanna blow $143 of it on a muffler. It is free shipping though... and I have kinda been wanting vibrant stuff but there spendy too.

2.25" is the best size.

So a 2.5" muffler wouldn't weld on to a 2.25" exhaust?

Any muffler shop should be able to do just that - like take a 2.5"-2.25" reducer and weld the pipe to the muffler. If you're concerned about it, just make a couple calls to local shops. As far as flow goes, the last foot or so of your exhaust being a different size isn't going to matter.

i believe dyno testing @ rs25 but it could be some where else, 2.5 is the biggest you go in na, 2.25 is the best bet for flow out of the 2.5L

Vibrant stuff isn't that pricey... I paid about 110 shipped for my brand new, in the box 2.25" muffler. The quality of it is out-of-this world, so if 130 or so is too pricey for you, don't get an exhaust at all.

And yes, a 2.5" muffler can be matted to a 2.25" exhaust, that's what exhaust shops do all day long...

if you're looking to stay on the quiet side (of loud lol) don't get the race core. they make a street series of the exact same muffler that would be a little quieter. like mike said the last foot of the exhaust really wont matter, just because this muffler has a 2.25 inlet if you read it still has 2.5 core so it would really be no different than welding a 2.5 onto 2.25 piping.
as for price if you make an offer for $130 they should take it, there are lots of people who sell this muffler so it is a buyers market, but in my experience $130 is as low as they'll go.

i dynoed 10whp and 15wtq more than my buddy with his 01 rs25 that has the same mods as me, but 2.5in exhaust. i have borla header to 2.5in id cat delete to 3in id pipe with vibrant res and vibrant street power muffler.

take it from a guy that had 3in id from the header back with and apexi n1 muffler. the patato shooter mufflers are not quiet at all with n/a car they are raspy as hell.

i told you in pm the best thing for you to do.

There is science to exhaust sizing, Bigger is not better.

take a look on google for "exhaust size calculator", or "exhaust pipe sizing"

everyone you find will tell you that you should have a 2.25" exhaust.....

well a 10hp and 15tq more than a car with full 2.5in id is worth it in my book. i know bigger is not always better.

I just dont want every one in the parking lot to think im a douche bag as soon as i go over 3k rpms and i dont wana have to drive slow at night to avoid every cop within a mile radius pulling me over... Exspecially after I go catless  So does that sound more like the street one or race? Are they "strait through" either way?

borla or magnaflow is the way to go! Magnaflow has a deep idle and once at woot you really hear it. Borla is deep also, but louder once you start to accelerate. Love my borla!

10-15 HP can be gained and lost thru a good/bad tune up, where you got your fuel, mileage, engine/trans wear, oil type/visco., hell even temperature. not to mention the endless list of other factors.

a 10-15 HP difference cant be labeled as simply exhaust..unless you wanted to run the car once, then switch the exhausts.

just sayin.

personally i say just sheet metal screw a coffee can to your straight pipes and call it a day....not really.

Naa I dont like the flatblack its just the only one they make in a 2.25"

I'm either going with the vibrant 2.5" N1 style I posted or the magnaflow one I'm just not sure to get street or race on the magnaflow.

I would be willing to bet you could go from stock exhaust (which is <2" in some spots) with a header to 2.5" exhaust with the same header and not gain 10whp on these cars, let alone 2.25" to 2.5". 1 dyno comparing 2 different cars with 2 different engines and 2 different degrees of wear and tear is not enough to disprove science and logic.

Anyway, I've used Borla and Magnaflow mufflers in the past. They are quality mufflers and they are straight through for performance, but they are effective. On my OLD car, I had a 22" long Magnaflow resonator and a Borla ProXS muffler. Even with headers and no cats, there was absolutely no rasp, and as far as performance exhausts go, it was pretty quiet.

Clicky (http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/472289/fullsize/kl-music.mp3)
First half is "normal" driving, 2nd half is full throttle.

I plan on going with the same combo when I do exhaust on the Legacy.

Hahahahaha!!!!! I.AM...AIRGNE!!!!

But yes, I did get the flat black one (the very same as Airgne). And let me tell you, the sound is wonderful. Before that, I was basically straight piped (after the cat, there was a big hole...) and it was LOUD. After I got the vibrant installed, not only was it smoother (power that is), but the car was quieter and sounded deep. NO RASP WHAT SO EVER. I wanted the flat black one to begin with though. Chrome doesn't really look right on a Outback...

Okay, so I went on a little search to find you a not flat black 2.25" Vibrant, and you were right. It seems Vibrant doesn't make them anymore (not on their online store). That's weird, because on my BK, I had a 2.25" Vibrant Streetpower axle back that wasn't flat black (they didn't even make the flat black ones then). I guess if you're wanting a Vibrant, you're going to have to go with 2.5" or find a 2.25" on a forum or an exhaust shop somewhere...

everything looks better flat black. everything.I disagree. Women...

Annny way im going to go with vibrant because magna-flow is a huge company and because this is quoted from vibrant's site

"All Vibrant Performance exhaust systems are designed to produce a low, deep and smooth exhaust tone on acceleration which
levels off at cruising speeds. We put a lot of time and effort into designing exhaust systems that produce both excellent power
gains and the kind of sporty exhaust tone that puts a smile on your face when you punch the gas pedal."

There is a shop sorta close to me that sells vibrant stuff im going to ask them about a 2.25" muffler and if not I think im going to go with a vibrant 2.25"x18" resonator and a 2.5" muffler.
