View Full Version : I let my girlfriend drive my car to work...

...It DIED going 82mph!

A temp sensor plug had rattled loose from the radiator, releasing all the coolant.

CAR OVERHEAT/CAR STOP!

By the time I get to it, coolant is everywhere, the fresh oil is SCORCHED, and I've got COOLANT DRIPPING OUT MY TAILPIPE!!

It was a new radiator, it was a low miles engine, I JUST HAD IT INSTALLED!

So, since this car is my PRIDE AND JOY, and I owe $2800 on it, it's going to be a garage dweller, unless I fix it. I will make an image journal and upload it to this post.

Of corse I fear the motor is beyond repair, but I guess we'll find out!

First the plugs will come out and test for pressure, THEN....???

Legacy83
03-04-2010, 08:59 AM
if coolant is coming out the tail pipe you might as well be ready to do head gaskets. plus before you start it again flush your coolant system through including the radiator. most people dont do it.

plus on top of that check and make sure the heads arent worped or the block.

aurelius
03-04-2010, 09:26 AM
Isn't the temp sensor in the water pipe sitting on top of the block?

kevbot
03-04-2010, 09:34 AM
yeah, It must have been some sort of port for an after market sensor... I don't know?!? I'll post pictures once I get started on the project, just gotta get the garage cleaned. We'll see how the heads look once I get it out, gotta get an engine stand though.

Thanks

Teach your girlfriend what the temperature gauge is for. In order for it to do that much damage, it had to have driven for a while with the temp gauge pegged.

Seriously. People, look at your gauges. So many cars getting towed in because people ignore their gauges and warning lights and destroy their engines.

my wife has melted my old dodge truck and this subaru motor once. you would think they would learn after the first time... "what are these needle looking thing in my dashboard connected to these things that seem to measure something...."

Ok, I got the motor out, it went great! We got it on a stand, but we can't get the CRANK PULLY BOLT loose... Oh, well. ANY TIPS...?

Heh, well anyways I'll keep torquing on it...It is "REGULAR" thread, RIGHT?

I'll put some pictures up soon...

Just stick a large flat head screwdriver in the teeth on the fly wheel if it's MT... if not enough leverage, you can inset the driver from the side and there are a few places it can seat on the motor-side of the bell housing... If this still doesn't help there is another trick I can tell you, but it'll take a while tp type... and impact gun (alone only, nothing holding the crank) also works wonders though, to remove it.

^ what he said, or if u have an impact, use it.

for future referance its best to loosen that while the engine is in the car and the car is in gear.

i used a chain wrench from home depot it worked good and, and i also got a strap wrench for the cam pulleys they sell em all at lowes or home depot

but its really just sad... im sorry man that sucks

kevbot

SO SAD! It's depressing, Like doing an autopsy on your dead wife! ~Creepy~ I thought it would be easier to get the pulley off with the motor out, I'll get it, though! I used a chain wrench on the pulley with a 15" breaker bar, and a 22mm socket with a 15" breaker bar on bolt. Then, Dustin and I suspend our-self's off the ground, each on a breaker, and bounce around! Maybe I need some BIGGER friends :D

Anyways, I'm gonna go wrench on it for a while, now!

its much easier to take out when the engines in the car.. however, you COULD make a tool yourself to do it if you wanted.. basically get a 2x4 or something.. get some heavy bolts or whatever, and make something that looks along the lines of this:

http://www.pten.com/images/article/1221835115025__SirTools_CrankshaftCou.jpg

If you can use metal.. like a metal bar + metal bolts.. i would. However, I would think that a 2x4 would hold up..

legacy98gt
03-10-2010, 11:32 AM
wats your chain wrench look like? is it like ise grips or just a wrachet? the ise grip ones work good and i just put a bar on it and 5 foot bar on the bolt and squeezed them togather it was hard but just get a long pole like 5 feet long and you can do it

kevbot
03-10-2010, 11:40 AM
So, your saying to beat on it with a 5' pole :smt018 J/K

Yeah, more leverage sounds good, just gotta find a pole...

Here's a picture of the chain wrench...

Do I spin the bolt counterclockwise then?

Uugh...!

legacy98gt
03-10-2010, 11:45 AM
yes counter clockwise, i used the one that looks like vise grips they worked good, ive never used those kind before, just use alot of leverage, i heard you can put a big breaker bar on the bolt and put it against somethin and try to start it, it will come right off

d1giPhux
03-10-2010, 11:47 AM
Hey... also, not sure how this works.. but apparently it does, and it looks like you can do it with the engine out of the car:

http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t113885 ... ulley.html (http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t113885-better-way-remove-your-crank-pulley.html)

If the engine was still in the car you could put it in 5th gear and have someone hold the brakes down, or bump start it.. but I dont think you want to do either of those things with the engine out of the car!

Also, yeah to loosen the bolt, same as normal. Left loose, right tight.

If you have an impact.. it will work. But you wont be able to torque it back to spec that way obviously.

legacy98gt
03-10-2010, 11:52 AM
thats cool, i never thought about doing like that lol

kevbot
03-10-2010, 11:58 AM
That RS25 Link was nice, I'll give it another shot once my buddy gets here. he's gonna bring an impact and air compressor... Just don't wanna send a breaker bar flying

Too late for the starter bump, engines already out....

it looks like you only need one person and the alternator, that looks easy i wish i new about this earlier lol

d1giPhux
03-10-2010, 12:15 PM
yeah.. you could always give it a go and see if its a 1 person affair or not. Nothing should go flying really if you jam it against the alternator the way they show in the DIY. However, I don't know if that runs the risk of causing any damage, but I don't think it would. You could always wrap a rag or something around the alternator just in case your extra paranoid. Or when your friend get there.. just have him hold the screwdriver with a breaker bar on it or something.

kevbot
03-10-2010, 01:51 PM
Still NOTHING!!! I have broken a few tools, though. I've got my 5' bar, I broke a chain wrench, a ratchet, and a screwdriver...

legacy98gt
03-10-2010, 02:25 PM
well i guess you could put i back in the car and do it that wat lol, im not sure wat to tell you man, if i was close i would go help you, did you spray some pb blaster on it? that might help

d1giPhux
03-10-2010, 02:56 PM
so you tried it that way.. and it didnt work? why didnt it work? it should have.. thats very strange. Id say impact it at this point.. or, did that not work too?

kevbot
03-10-2010, 02:59 PM
Eh, I'll figure out something... It's just a pulley bolt!
Yeah, Maybe the PB Blaster will seep in eventually...
For now, I'm gonna make a pulley tool, like the one pictured.

d1giPhux
03-10-2010, 03:15 PM
^ You wouldnt even need the extensions and the bar if you were using an impact id assume..

I can't believe that NONE of these ways have worked for you. Sounds like you just need a proper set of chain vise grips then:

legacy98gt
03-10-2010, 03:20 PM

kevbot

I FINALLY GOT IT! *(Just in time for supper)* Stuck a screwdriver through the flexplate to torque converter bolt-hole, and jammed it with the engine stand!! Used my 5' pole and wrenched away!!

Now, I feel like i did something with my day... I got ONE bolt off my engine today!!!

Thanks for your ideas, stay tuned for next time.

[EDIT]: Ohh, you got it! I guess I'll leave this anyway incase somone else is having trouble in the future...

Alright, since you're still having a hard time...
This is my super secret technique garunteed to work (provided you wrap well enough) that once made a 40 years experience mechanic sit down speechless and just space out for several moments.

Instead of writing a whole bunch of text, just take a look at this picture I whipped up with my mad MS Paint skills, lol.
Imagine the 2 pulleys (Crank and Power Steering) and the grey line is a much longer belt I had taken off a truck at some point. You just need to pinch it over on it's self so that it over-runs enough to grip the pulley... As you tighten it up (By turning the bolt/crank the direct required to loosen the bolt), the slack will run out (wrapping the belt around the crank) until pulled tight on the PS pulley... a few more pulls and your bolt will break free

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/03/KlixTipCrankPulleyRemoval-1.jpg

Wrapping the belt the opposite direction allows you to tighten it!

Goodluck and enjoy...

First, I have to say that I'm sorry for your loss.

Second, I've battled the pulley bolt before too. I tried holding it. I tried a strap wrench. I cussed a lot. I have an auto so I couldn't hold it with the trans. Finally I took out the radiator and the condensor and used an impact. It came right off. It went back on to the hell ever torque I torqued it to.

It might cost you the seal but you could try heating it up real good. The seal is cheap anyway.

kevbot

That's Awesome! I'd take it and run off, what's he gonna do? He's a crack head! Can't get the cam pulleys off, should just pay a crack head to get it off for me...tell him I'll pay him $20.00 per pulley, he'll get em off! Then instead of paying him I'll just run off!!
Got any other ideas?

Ok, this thread sucks.

Yesterday I was driving along getting rowdy with the throttle like usual and wham the cheap chinese timing belt I've been using just shredded. So I had AAA tow it home and I quickly stripped it down all the way to the crank pulley.

I have thus far tried wedging large allen wrenches in those holes, but my holes aren't like the ones pictured in this thread. They are smaller. I can't get a normal length 1/4 drive extension in there because it's too long and the allen wrenches are bending. I tried a strap wrench and it just slips. I tried using the alternator belt on itself and it just slips. Next I plan to see if Auto Zone has any alternatives to a chain wrench. If they don't I'll just get the chain wrench. I don't want to know what the Subaru tool costs.

I blame this problem 60% on Chinese parts and 40% on this thread. The timing is just amazing. The good thing is I think this is the last of the exploding Chinese parts that I installed on it. I hope the water pump I put on it wasn't crappy too. I can't remember.

d1giPhux
03-15-2010, 11:41 AM
Like i said before somewhere.. I think you could make a crank pulley tool out of a 2x4 and some bolts. You need something that basically looks like this:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/

A 2x4 with a hole in it.. and some bolts may just do the trick..

StatGSR
03-15-2010, 12:01 PM
heck if its still in the car you could still use the starter blip trick.

or you can still use the belt wrap trick that was shown in this thread.

Black Sunshine
03-15-2010, 02:02 PM
I tried the belt trick but it wouldn't get itself tight enough, you probably need a new belt that is still really rubbery, even then it may not handle the load. I don't think a pine 2x4 would handle the load. I used a chain wrench, the bolt would just rip it up. It left nice little bite marks all the way around the pulley, I guess I'll file them smooth with my Dremel. My seals with 40K miles on them haven't leaked at all! So that's a victory. Now I have to find a dealer that has both the belt and the cover gaskets.

klix
03-15-2010, 09:23 PM
Sorry, I should have said that. I wouldn't use a chain wrench on pulleys unless it's garbage.

The belt I used the past couple of times for my trick doubles as the handle on a garbage can and is cracked to hell. It'll work, it just needs to be wrapped a bit tighter... or the belt you're recycling here is just not long enough (not enough wrap)

kevbot
03-18-2010, 10:33 AM
Every thing is ready to go! I got every thing apart, and I've cleaned the block and heads. I had to wait for gaskets, plugs and cleaning, so I decided to paint the Intake manifold, Alternator bracket, Valve covers, and Oil pan. (why not, Right? ) I've got my new head bolts, rebuild gaskets, oil pan gasket, some new stainless, new plugs and thermostat. I (of course) could not resist, at the same time, ordering a new K&N cone filter, MSD coil and Header wrap...so much for keeping it cheap. (I know, I'm a fiend :smt022 )

Anyways, I still have to clean the engine bay. Then it's all ready to put back together, God-willing!

On a side note, upon return from a friends house in the country, my girlfriends '95 Legacy Lsi's Torque converter blew out. (Upon further investigation) The transmission seems to be shot!

Yeah, um, every thing LOOKS real good, I checked with a straight edge and feeler gauge. They were virtually NO gaps or visible damage, valves all work. Kinda thinking the engine died the second the head gaskets blew. I just don't know how long it had over heated before it quit... I have to try and figure out how it all goes back together, I already am drawing a blank as to how some things go back together!
