I installed the pulley, put the belts back on and now theres a ridiculous amount of squeal coming from my engine, that make yours ears bleed if you stand in front of it. I'm pretty sure its the belts and alternator pulley since after turning off the engine after 10 seconds of letting it run to find where exactly the noise was coming from, the Alt pulley was the hottest.

Any ideas what it could be and/or I tightened my belts too much? (I also loosened em both, and got the same result)

Happened to me too! It's my power steering pump for some werid reason, let it warm up and drive it for 5min, my squeal goes away and sounds normal after warm.

Usually squeeling+hot pulley=slipping=too loose.

In my experience, the belts on Subies need to be pretty tight in order to get them to not slip. Also, if the belt is older and glazed, it will be more prone to slipping/squeeling.

really? you just did work on the pulleys, now theyre squeeling...hmmm...tighten them.... still squeeling? tighten them more.

those tensioners have alot of travel for a reason.

if your alt pulley was hot, that means friction...that means belt slip.

Thanks alot guys, thought I had it tight, apparently not tight enough. Way tighter than I thought it would be but oh well, its all good now and I get the revs I want without the noise =)

Werid, mine is pretty freakin tight! New gator belts, I guess I will crank her down more and see if it fixes it.

Flat belts have to be disturbingly tight, unlike the old V belts that needed a little play.

Tried it all... Pulled my pump and replaced it, didn't put the belt that tight and no more squealing. Pump pulley shaft felt sloppy and loose.... Problem fixed for me 147k miles on orginal pump.

Are you sure the shaft of the crank pulley or any other pullies is not squeeling? that could be your problem. Seems like you have a lot of miles and rust does build up.

never mind I see you fixed it!

That depends on the belt routing and the width of the belt. On our cars, there isn't enough contact between the belt and alt pulley, only abut 80* or so and the belt is pretty narrow. So you have to make up for that with a lot of tension. Other cars wrap the belt around the alt up to about 270*, so the belt can be looser (more loose?)

rust on the crank pulley shaft would never cause a squeaking noise, and the only other shaft that could get rusty is the alternator, but cant say ive ever heard of that

I bought the Kartboy lightweight alum pulley and had the same problem. On the pulley it has a bunch of groves for the belt. On mine one of those ridges had a bend in it, caused the squealing. I bent it back and straightened it out with a flat tip screw driver. Some thing to look for...
