View Full Version : Hotty Top Mount Intake Non Turbo Build

Looking to possible get a list of people seriously interested in buying a replica gravlesports intake for roughly $200. Have a shop local here that is going to make a prototype on my car, it will use all your vac lines(might have to ext. the hoses a little, easy fix) and will use your oem or drop in filter. I know the intake is soo rare and last I herd only 34 in the U.S. so I want to see if anyone else is interested in one so I can let the fab shop know. Either way I will have 1 for my car and will probably make it easier, cheaper, and faster if they know they have to keep my car in the shop longer to build more then 1.

what are these gravelsport tm intakes?
why are they so rare?
what makes them special?
pics?

It's a top mount intake, they were made exactly for the impreza guys but direct fitment for legacys too. Alot of people don't know anything about them or never herd of the intake cause it was soo rare and limited number made only back in 2004. The mounting will be different on the box and direct bolt on.
This is what they are going off of...

so this only works with a hood scoop then?
Matty2Hotty
03-05-2010, 06:01 PM
Nope, it will fit under regular hood, scoop is not required but will throw in more fresher air. Can't find the thread but a guy did a dyno with 8hp gain and alot better throttle repsonse. Sounds quiet regular driving but at WOT she growls!

sucks for BD owners since the whole MAF thing was a huge issue.

I take it that these wouldnt work with the MAF intake systems? I dont see a way of connecting the MAF sensor to the intake, but if there is a way you got me interested.

03-05-2010, 06:34 PM
Yeah I know, been trying to figure a way out to get a MAF in there, I mean there would be enough pipe on the back section to cut and fit it in maybe. I'm MAP so I can't say... Maybe have the guys "loop" the piping longer and bigger from the side of the box. Here is a coated black one shop made by another guy.

cant drive your car in the rain? or am i missing something?
if im not missing anything thats a pretty awful idea.

03-05-2010, 08:59 PM
Guys have driven in pouring down rain and no problems. Everything thinks you hyrdolock a motor from getting the filter wet. Wrong! You seriously have to suck in a cup full of water all at once to damage or do any harm to your engine plus the design of the intake angled with port hole on the bottom for any drainage. Its all covered on the RS forums about it. Im making a plexiglass cover for mine though to be safe. Talked the company today and they are going to be made of stainless and he is going to be around $150 for the intake.

i had something similar to this on my toyota, i never had any rain problems but i always wanted to get some extra door insulation molding to go between the hood and the edge of the filter, i had a theory that it would help channel air into the filter. but later i just turbocharged it..

interesting idea.. I might be interested in it if it worked with a maf system. Technically all they need to do is cut the pipe in the middle, included a welded on maf adapter and then the person would need their own tubing to connect the other side.

Wow this is pretty interesting. I know I have heard a couple folks on here work on this idea before. I might be in for one as well, seeing as that I have one of those funky MAP EJ22 BK's. Water and snow would be my only worry about the intake. Other than that it would be a great addition.

This would only really be worthwhile if you had it sealed against the hood and had a functional hood scoop. Otherwise it would be drawing in hot air from right above the engine (i.e. REALLY hot air)

I know that this intake isn't for us MAF owner.
lets say it was made to work for us (MAF).
would it cause any issues from the MAF having a shorter pipe before the throttle body?
mike-tracy
03-06-2010, 04:35 AM
I'm still confused on what this does. So it is supposed to get cooler air above the engine (from a hood scoop most likely) than from the stock intake? Does the shorter path to the throttle body help?
I think I understand the point of the stock "torque box" coming off the throttle body - instant and on demand air for WOT, etc, is that the same idea here? From what I've experienced (by temporarily replacing my 2.5's torque box with standard 2.2's intake) without the box the car had slower throttle response. I didn't do dyno runs, of course, but that's how it felt to me. Also is 9hp big enough to conclusively prove that it's working and isn't related to temperature changes, and other factors, etc between dyno runs? Same thing with the "throttle response," can we be sure that it wasn't the tester's butt dyno?
I'm not discounting that this could work, but I'd like to see some proof.

There was a giant discussion about this before, maybe somewhere else. I think it was Shane that pointed it out.
For this to work adequately with the MAF systems, the tub would have to be extended alot, and then rerouted with the MAF in place where the tube was fairly straight without any major causes of crazy turbulence. Turbulence while good for getting power, is bad at the point where readings are being taken.
People also talked about avoiding water damage by using that foamy insert spacer thing at some point in the tube.

I think it would be a good idea to have the box sloped away from the intake pipe, with a breather filter stuck on a bung at the lowest point so if it does get waterlogged, you can just drain it.

I would totally buy one if there was a MAF version worked out. Hopefully it can be done.

MAF is in design so it might be months... The map will be done Tuesday for testing, stainless box and lid with black piping. Red or blue i can get but shooting for $160 plus shipping.
+1 of serious people so I know a show of hands.

Yeah responed to your other thread i think over on legacy GT.com i like they way it looks and think it would go well wiht the vis V-line hood just currious what kind of sensor would i have on a 2000 BH wagon MAF? or MAP?
I had just picked up my Leggy and was thinking about doing a CAI or the short air thing. Sense i havnt invested any money in either of those yet i would be willing to give this a shot +1.. This was the hood i was mentioning[attachment=0:389oghe7]carbon fiber hood.jpg[/attachment:389oghe7]
Matty2Hotty
03-13-2010, 11:04 PM
Yeah I honestly haven't seen anyone running this hood! You will have to look at your intake system to see if your MAF or MAP, there is I guess a sensor somewhere? Not sure since am MAP.
green97gt
03-13-2010, 11:32 PM
if your not running a MAF system why wouldnt it come from the back of the box, thru a C shaped pipe and into the throttle body?
kind of like a ram air effect thing, i mean, if your fabbing up your own CIA/short ram, why not go balls deep? and make it as direct, and short a path as possible?
does that make any sense? i mean, im sure it would take more work, but more effective maybe?

a 2000, with the SOHC 2.5 should be a MAP based system.

if your going to do that you should get some kind of an insulator to go between the hood and the box, to create a high pressure area for the filter to grab air from with out it i have a feeling the air will rush right past it. and when your at a dead stop the filter is just going to grab hot air from the engine. like i said. i have experimented with this idea before.

This is the idea behind the intercooler shroud/splitter on turbo subarus. There is a rubber seal that makes the intercooler only get air from the outside through the scoop.

well for 1, this is for non turbo cars so warm air from the engine isn't going to change anything at a dead stp.
2nd, you don't drive your car at a dead stop or dyno a car with no air flow. And 3rd, I don't want a seal to the filter to channel every drop of rain or car wash. Even though am making a plexiglass cover that sits 1/2 off the filter for rainy weeks/months here in Washington that will be screwed onto the lid for easy install/take off.
you should start making a list in the first post..
im in for the MAF version + your plexi-cover thing whenever its completed

let me start of by saying i didn't meaning to come off like a dick ^^^ im just sharing my experiences.
anyways. these guys make a bunch of handy things for making intake systems.
http://www.siliconeintakes.com/index.ph ... 3ca5e8ea0c (http://www.siliconeintakes.com/index.php?osCsid=eef114dd7a8297ba5dff373ca5e8ea0c)
ok your right on the first point, however i would like to challenge points 2 and 3.
on my toyota, when i tried this, i usually had to be going at least 40 MPH to before intake air was affected by scoop.
(i know this due to a few tests we did with fans, air compressors and an air temp guage) so 0-40 there was a very slight (.5 of a degree) increase in intake temp. the fan was plowing warm air all over the engine compartment.
granted, the hood angle is slightly different between subarus and toyotas.
with the toyota, the air was coming from behind the headlight, and the reason i put the shroud on the filter is because after i put the filter under the scoop i had a raised intake air temp because behind the headlight is a high pressure point. and after i sealed it it came back down. however, the factory set up still seemed to be the best mechanically because when i put in the hood scoop there seemed to be more noise above 65mph, the k&n filter gets discolored, the disposable ones get crazy dirty really fast, the rain would get the filter wet, not that it would really matter a whole lot cuz the truck ran so hot that by the time the small about of water reached the engine it would basically steam clean the motor. (which is the exact same thing sea foam does) :smt024
but since you mentioned the Plexiglas i am assuming this is more for the look than the performance of the induction system
and again. im not trying to be a dick. just sharing my experiences. CHEERS!

Whats best way for me to figure out if i have a SOHC or DOHC ? also what is best place for me to look to see if i have this MAF or MAP sensor. not sure what either of them look like. thanks
I to think i might have to fabricate some kind of cover for days when there are downpours maybe?

count the cams?
a MAF sensor will be in the plastic intake tubing of your subaru. a MAP will be on the intake manifold, and MUCH smaller.
correct me if im wroung, but 1st and second gen legacies are all MAF, 3rd and on are MAP(and also SOHC)

^ Mostly true...... The California Model '99 Legacy 2.2L 30th Ann Edition (Gen 2 Legacy) uses the 2nd Gen EJ22. It is both MAP and single exhaust port. lol  It is a real odd ball if I may say so..... Though it makes this a bolt on affair.

Well here you guys go, bill came to $196 after parts, fittings and build...Could of went cheaper but not for this quality that will last and not blow up on someone. The Front PVC line is too short and i need to go to the auto parts store tomorrow and get a 1/2" hose 3"longer then OEM. I have about a 1/2" hood clearance looking into the hood scoop when closed. AND YES, its 2am Saturday and the shop guys just left!

on that pic of your(?) motor, the spark plug wires almost point to a bit gold box, that must be on your passenger firewall.
what is it? i dont remember one being there on my 00 outback.

Just the oem black box off the intake, it's oem just painted. It's for looks now since it's not used, debating on removing it.

oh, ok, so its your intake box BS. i removed all mine and plugged them up somehow. my sisters been driving it for a while...no issues.
says it(00 outback) doesnt like hills to much....oh well.
my intake boxes and silencers and bs on the 00 just kept coming apart at the joints, etc. so i removed what i could, and actually used some intake boots i had laying around from a 76/78 datsun 280z to seal it all up.
hope these intakes sell for ya.
but i am wondering, would it be more cost effective to mold these from fiberglass, etc? or is there some issue im overlooking?

So i went to autozone.... they dont have our 14" intake filter, only a 11" so that is all BS. K&N i ordered up so i have to wait 3days. Drove around for 2 hours in the blazin sun today, poped the hood and the intake is box is not even hot... cool to the touch! I was so surprised everything else i touch is freakin hot! So Stainless sure does keep the heat out and away for sure!

Sounds good so far. thanks for the updates i think i am definatly looking into getting this, how much did they say at auto zone the prices was on the 14" filter.
i looked at my engine code says i got the EJ252 so i think i got the MAP sensor type aswell(on the front passenger side of the air filter box?)
Got to convince the wife to let me spend the money and might have to wait till mid month paycheck in april i could probably even drive up to tacoma and pick up aswell. If you have any left by then.

just was clicking around in the DIY forums and came accross a thread for an air spliter DIY viewtopic.php?f=39&t=10742&start=0 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=10742&start=0)
thought something like this may be nice add-on to the air filter system. also was thinking of some way to maybe attach a seal(like a trunk type seal) to maybe the heat shield for under the hood.
My thought here was if your cutting a hole for the air to flow threw and keep you stock under hood insulation could you cut it to to let the air threw, and then attach a seal to the liner that way you getting some seal between the hood and the air intake to keep the hotter engine air from being sucked in the air intake?? was going to take some pictures or draw it up to see what you guys think..
