on the car, loving the stance....i know the car is dirty...from a rally recce and developed some boost leak at the intercooler entry, the most cool thing about this is the water to air intercooler= no need for a scoop = stealthyness= less attention

hey guys been too long an update huh, i have been extra busy with school and work and hadnt had enough time to upload my recent documentation of my builds. consequently, with time i removed my overflow bottle due to space issues, i was stupid enough to go for a top end run with my buddies, who have evos stis supras and skylines....loss of coolant meant hight crank case temperatures, which lead to a big end bearing failure. sad

yes i did. took me a while but finally i got some free time. i replaced the crank with an STI II RA item some standard OEM subaru forged pistons, shimmed oil pump, and con and main bearings. due to a bad tune and too low fuel octane level i managed to crack two of my pistons realy bad. :lol: thats why i had to replace the pistons later onhttps://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/01/DSC02931-1.jpg

Looks like you run with some fast cars there, why did you end up getting a legacy instead of a turbo'd STI or something? Not to say that getting a legacy was a bad idea or anything :wink:

i just wanted something practical since i hang out with lots of racing guys and rallyists. carrying gearboxes and stuff. wagons are also good for grand touring...and you know we can make some pretty interesting journeys here in Kenya. and my legacy is turbo'ed with an old skool..sti engine. so i kind of keep up. here are some more photos of the guys and me at the extreme end.

oh and i had to remove the lowering springs..they were kind of cumbersome when driving on bad roads. all the scrapping was getting to me so i took them out and put back the standard springs....but still with the apexi adjustable shocks.

heres me at a local workshop, changing turbos after old one wasnt performing as it should. i was swapping from a vf8 to a td05H from an STI II impreza. eventually i had to change back coz the lag on the td05H wasnt wanting. though when it came up to boost it would realy haul ass.

as the year 2010 ended, i had a lot of misfortunes that made me question my quest for speed. as you have noticed there is a red evo VI makkinen edition in my photos. it was owned by a good friend of mine and master tuner Amir, who later on sold it to his brother Zul.

Zul was the organiser of all our events, meets, runs and shows. he was a loving father and a very good friend. he passed on two weeks later from his extensive injuries. he will be greatly missed.

Wow man, that's quite a story. Sorry about your friend. He looks like a good guy.

I've been in some of my friends sti's before and dang those things can move! I've always thought about upgrading my N/A 2.2L, but I feel just fine with how the car is now. I probably will get a turboed engine in my car someday, but it's just not in the plans yet. Driving across the country sounds like a great time. I would love to do that someday that's for sure!

It's funny you got rid of your springs, since I did the same thing this summer, haha! I had tein lowering springs on my car with jdm bilstein struts, and they were just too many harsh bumps around here, offroad or on pavement. I went back to the original springs keeping the bilstein struts and I love it. Maybe a bit more function over form but it works better this way.

hey guys!! long time no see!!! well alot has changed on my car since i have been here. my motor finally needed and upgrade after. head gasket failure after head gasket failure. i still don't know the cause but i can rule out boost coz 6psi will do nothing to hurt my car, i have water inter cooling which is constantly circulated through the front heat exchanger and water never gets even too warm. i suspected the spark plugs but nope. too high compression from head phasing..maybe...EGR could be. other than that i get the ping treatment every time i give it some beans. and its obviously led to my misfortunes. so it was time for a new long block. bye bye RS-RA ej20G!! here :smt010 some pics of the tear down

so apparently the long block i had expected to get didnt come through so i was engineless. :mad: i had a choice to put back my old NA lump or to rebuild my current motor and pray it doesnt explode under boost. you guessd right i went along and rebuilt my motor. boost FTW. :twisted: i used the car for about 4weeks, thats like 2000ks of use. then one day i had the sound all scooby drivers freak out about. knocka knock. but it wasnt in the big end it was a ticka tick. which rose up with the rpms. dips stick okay, oil press okay (new oil pump), what could be it. a million and one additive attempts and nothing.

this was bad coz the car had lost power due to the knock sensor picking up alot of activity in the engine and retarding the timing.
another cause for the power loss was soon discovered to be the valves not closing completely shut, this was due to the soft HLAs or hydraulic lash adjusters not feeling p with oil properly. so boost was literaly non existent. luckily thank God for internet i found a thread on an ausi forum called RSlibertyclub.org on how to repair these hydraulic lash adjusters manually.
i am sorry i have no pics :oops: but i replaced a couple of HLAs on the right head by removing the valve covers and the adjusters...i did this with motor still in the car.
as soon as i was done i started it up with brand new oil. turn out two were seized by pieces of aluminum from the skimming. hmmmm smart. and the oil orifice that feeds the right head was also clogged up with skimmed aluminum( mind you the machine shop assured me that they had pressure cleaned everything to the single gallery.) guess they punked me...punks. any way the big moment came and i started it up. quiet as...only the injectors and pulleys could be heard. wow was i happy. then the moment came to give it a rev vrooom pshhhht!! like a bike and wow was i stoked!! took it out for a drive and the rush of power i had missed suddenly came back and wow was i happy. i pulled over and gave it a little rev and knock a knock or is it a clacking noise coming from smack in the middle of the block.BIGEND FAILURE!!!! :smt021 babied it back to the work shop. my mate gave it a rev and the look on his face was definite...tEar up began next day. here is a single picture. the number 4 rod was literally dancing on the crank. and the bearing itself was non existent. here is the box of the bearings i used. any comments???

questions.. :smt017 too many questions. clearances was done during build, motor never reved passed 5k rpm. no continous top speed runs like 200kph for 30sec or so...basically i babied this car. this only mean one thing i gotta learn to let go, if i am to enjoy these cars.

without wasting anytime with the Safari Rally around the corner i needed an engine. i found a 98 STI form the breakers. it had an STI version 4 maniflold and a vf28 turbo. so i am not sure the block had forged internals or cast items but it looked mint and low milleage. dash read 55000ks. didnt hesitate and got the long block for cheap. seller was stingy and took out all the accessories. AC pump, Alternator, turbo, manifold,,,,heck even the timing belt covers!!!! :smt011 it was okay since my turbo was good, manifold good,alternator and harness will basically marry with the new long block. here some pictures

note the blue stuff is can spray to prevent customers returning exchanged goods...dunno how its gonna work since i have can spray at home too....in that same colour lol. and my ej20G manifold fits like a glove!!

here is an interesting picture showing the cam pulley differences between the ej20G and the ej20k. the one on the left is ej20k and the one on the right is the Ej20G cam pulley. the black one is plastic the metal one is alluminium.
I stuck with the alluminium ones to avoid cracks and it just gave me piece of mind.

update after a very loong long time. i got a chance to dyno my car at the very first dyno in my country!!!!! no tuning, just a couple of sweeps. had ols spark plugs, leak in the intake, which got worse as the pulls progressed.

heres my dyno sheet....with a little more tuning and higher boost i should be in the 250WHP range
boost was at a mere 0.5bar with missfire on the top end
if you cant see clearly i made
194.2WHP at 5700rpm with 182 lbs/ft of torque. not bad for an untuned heap with old plugs. next is a vf34 turbo, ram tube, 440cc injectors and a god damn tune!!!

the main reason to go FMIC was because the pump for my chargecooler went out, and i have been driving like that for a month now, no other OEM intercooler can fit apart from the slanty from the early WRX which honestly, doesnt stack up much to the water cooler...the next feasible replacement and upgrade fell down to a FMic....
any one know how il hack my bumper to fit?

here we are after a test drive ....albeit some boost leaks(which we fixed by the way)...the car pulls....and pulls...and pulls. .the lag and loss of throttle response is not as apparent and devastating as people tend to make it. maybe because i am running a vf22...which doesnt have a problem filling up that large core. but my boost kicks in at 3500 rpm and pulls all the way to redline..
torque has massively increased..learned the hard way, after my clutch started slipping an 1.3bar. i may need to adjust it since its still the cable clutch i changed last year.. best mod i have ever done.

ok..snap..just discovered the tanabe TI to be freaking LOUD!! my head would ring for minutes after shutdown...i also noticed abit of overboost after fitting the exhaust. I will be switching from the Ti to a Legalis super R. i got tones of positive reviews on that one. will be posting pictures soon.

depending where your from, you can get used motors from japan...or salvage as you say. but for builds like this, its better you start with essentials like suspension and brakes..then the motor. here some pics of the leone after having some fun.
(the brembos were too grabby for the light weight car so we went back to normal 4pots which work perfect)

well the other day i was just driving casually from a Dance festival and suddenly the car started juddering about and the check engine started flashing on and off. i could smell something burning electrical so i immediately pulled over popped the bonnet and removed the battery terminals.
by the time I was going back in the car the cabin was filled with smoke, coming from the passenger footwell.
i knew it was the ECU or short in the harness.
i dont have pics or vids but i limped back home, removed the ecu from the now burned harness and this is what i found.

basically the car starts up and idles fine, no misfire or CEL. but once you get it in gear and move forward, the CEL lights up and you get into limp mode. funny enough, this doesnt happen in reverse gear. somewhat crazy. its sad. anyway i dont have the patience or soldering talent to fix this... i have a spare Z4 ecu lying around.

what happened since its a swapped car, two of the wires of the merged harness touch each other, when their insulation, melted or broke off. so there was short circuit. bugger. all that is fixed now. glad it didnt happen after I installed my ESL mappable ECU.

anyone planning to do a swap should learn from this a do proper wiring.

well alot has happened since then, it took me a while to setup the ESL ecu(which is pretty easy btw), so i kept on using the Z4 ecu with the rather aggressive jdm timing and fueling maps.
there is a run we usually do called the great run as you saw earlier, i set my boost abit high at altitude, and it overboosted at sea level.
from 1.1bar to 1.8bar at sea level. within a couple of hours of the run a 600kms later, the inevitable happened.

was cruising behind a very fast rather breathed on toyota and i heard the unmistakable sound of flattened big end bearings. guess it pinged itself to death..

thank God i had another engine sitting about. its a version 2 STI. all i had to do was swap my injectors and turbo over, the long block and heads are in pretty good nick, so there was no need to split them.

there was LOTS and i mean LOTS of cleaning to be done here, but there was no time, it was holiday time, people were lazy, and i needed to travel to see my family.
we also dug into the harness, and tidied it up abit. rerouting it through the fender, rather than the firewall, foe most of it. remember what happened to the SC ecu?

since i am tired of manual boost controllers, i have gone back to the original impreza boost control solenoid, which i will tune with ESL
to achieve my boost.

here i am on start up, everything is fine with the engine no leaks, squeaks or rattles.. also no CELs too. heres the interface with the ESL ecu.

i road tuned the car to a peak boost of 1.3bar which is 20psi there. there is no knock whatsoever, maybe an occasional count here and there, but no big increments. i am running a realy conservative timing map, to deal with the piss fuel in my country.

okay how many of you have ever had their bonnet open up at speed? i had that happen to me like a day after i came back into the country. a hell of a way to start the new year.
i was full boost on second gear and the bonnet flew up hitting the windscreen and shattering it. i braked hard as much as i could and kept it straight. thank God i didn't hit anyone, or anything.

i had to buy a new windscreen and fix up my bonnet. it wasnt too damaged, and i dint feel like looking for a replacement.
can say the same for this guy who tried to keep up with the guys in the background .

the 6s should be able to give you more boost like 15psi easy. is there something wrong with your vf24? have you checked all the plumbing for leaks?? just make sure everything is up to spec. no leaks no CELs etc

Hi, been away for some time. There're no cels, all vacs and hoses are tight with no cracks. The vf24 however had quite some lateral play, and getting another was just annoyingly difficult. So I got a td05 16g (elbow hacked mod), not much but it'll hold 10psi now at around 5000rpm, have not had the chance to do a full banana run. Also done a full decat but I want to install a full 3" soon, got a 2.5 with stock silencer.

wow its been long!! time for some updates!!! basically what was missing on this car was the magic tune that i am running, i have run it all year no problems yet.. with a boost of 20Psi or 1.3bar on metric terms, only thing is my third gear, especially after inducing a Speed density tune. thats right no more pesky MAF sensors!!! whoo hooo!!! the car is a beast to say the least, you will see most of that in the comming posts and pictures.

since then i have installed some greddy type S coilovers, some new wider offset Advan wheels etc etc, no much drama has begotten the car, till like a month ago, i blew third gear, while testing the cars' launch capability lol.

one of the scariest things happened couple of months ago, i was in a rally transport section driving out onto the highway, when my power steering pipe split, draining all the fluid, hence the steering became super hard. it was on a highway so i didnt matter much since il be doing little to no tight turns. this had happened before couple of years ago, i replaced the pipes and the car was good to go. i though id do the same this time only for the whole damn steering rack to fall on my way home.. the car would turn left, straighten out, but would turn right no matter what i did. i slowed down to crawl, thank goodness i was just a few KMs from my house.
this was the carnage when i got the damn thing out.

this was also the same time I decided to change my gearbox too.... not alot of pictures sadly though. i was tired of skipping third everytime i shifted and the car was a dog to drive.

replacement box, from a Version II STI ... should be 3:9 or 4:11 final.... not sure.

here is the gearbox thats going in... didnt have time to clean everything up since i needed the car back on the road ASAP, i did change the fluids though. i also had to swap over the speedometer sensors since the legacy one is electronic and the GC8 RA uses cable.

i also had to change my clutch system from Cable to hydraulic engagement because of the STI box. it works perfectly if you have everything, including the clutch pedal from a car with a hydraulic clutch.

Something happened couple of weeks later.... just when i had fitted a new clutch and pressure plate... i had an accident... I was logging my car just to refresh my tune and was cruising on the highway at about 120kph... Theres a piece of rough tarmac that has been curved out by super heavy lorries. i hit it coz my lights had yellowed so much due to moisture, couple with dying HIDs. i lost control of the car.... luckily there was no other cars on the road at the time.... but there was just this one Golf which happened to be in the middle lane, and was doing like 10kph... i rear ended it so hard that it was thrown off the road tumbling over and facing the wrong way.

Thank God for the bracing I did after intercooler fitment, the core was perfect apart from a small nick, here and there.. and it looked somewhat reusable.

At that time it was running the TMIC, which sucked, :smt011 :smt011 as the little thing doesnt flow too well, and doesnt cool the charge either.
i had to retune and turn down the boost from 1.5bar, back down to 1.1bar for safety. it was nice to have the car back after two months of driving a Toyota. More pics of the FMIC Re-install coming up

whatever was notched/trimmed or shaved was repainted and reinforced to prevent future structural problems. i made it so strong, that you could actually stand up on the intercooler.

Sad news from Kenya. I lost a friend, a brother and mentor in a tragic road accident two weeks ago. this guy influenced alot of my build and was always keen to see what i would come up with. He had a head on collision with another friend of mine who was driving on the opposite direction. The road is similar to a canyon road with blind corners, and enthusiasts frequent there to test their machinery. He was driving his Nissan Skyline GTR R34 and the other guy had an E63 AMG and they unfortunately met at a blind corner. the GTR was thrown in the bushes and caught on fire. the AMG didnt take a direct hit and the driver survived albeit being seriously injured. The skyline being made entirely of carbon panels trapped my brother amir, the impact was so violent that he died on the spot and was trapped as the car burnt. May his Soul Rest in Eternal peace my brother.

New wheels time... unfortunately on a spirited drive, found a piece of broken road and damaged two of my left side wheels... all of them at the same time. Advan do make good wheels, but no Forged or over priced wheel would have survived such a hit.

Ive always admired OZ RACING wheels, kinda never found a spoke pattern that can work on wagons.. the ones that i found didnt clear brembos. but i found these, for a good price too.
