Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
SUBARU / LEGACY 1996-1998
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00I002000
Summary:
THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN ALTERNATOR PROBLEM THAT CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF CHARGING CAPABILITY.
Consequence:
IF THE ALTERNATOR FAILS, THE ALTERNATOR WARNING TELLTALE WILL ALERT THE DRIVER TO THE PROBLEM, GIVING AMPLE OPPORTUNITY TO SEEK REPAIR BEFORE A LOSS OF BATTERY POWER, WHICH, IF THE WARNING WERE IGNORED, COULD ULTIMATELY RESULT IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE POWER (ENGINE STALL).
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR WITH A MODIFIED ALTERNATOR. OWNERS WILL ALSO BE CAUTIONED THAT, SHOULD THE ALTERNATOR TELLTALE WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATE, THEY MUST SEEK IMMEDIATE REPAIR TO AVOID THE EVENTUAL LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ENGINE STALL.
Notes:
SUBARU HAS DECIDED TO CONDUCT A SERVICE PROGRAM TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR. THIS REPLACEMENT CAMPAIGN WILL BE CONDUCTED IN PHASES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 15, 2000. OWNERS CAN CONTACT SUBARU AT 1-800-782-2783, CONCERNING THIS PROGRAM.

Mine got replaced at some point under that recall. At least I'm assuming it did. It says "remanufactered by Subaru" on it.

Its funny to me that they actually had a safety recall on this. They basically even say it in the recall text itself. Basically says "if you are stupid enough to ignore the built-in warning light telling you that your car has a problem, the engine may stall."

its not a recall its a "safety improvement" and i wish they would have gages for everything like they do in trucks and most SUV's. also if you can smooth talk your dealer and say that your recalled altinator has failed and you want a new one. i would give it a try.

I guess I should have read the first line lol, says it isn't a recall. oops, me stupid.

The gauges in most cars are about as worthless as the warning lights imo. They are dummy gauges, they have a huge dead spot in the middle of the gauge which indicates what the manufacturer considers to be "normal" That's why our temperature gauges will warm up and just stay right in the middle from then on, despite the fact that there is like a 20-30* variation during normal driving.
