so i spun a bearing in my cylinder head  and had a couple of questions that i could not resolve with the local guys,

i have a 1999 2.2 California emission engine mated to an automatic, and i was wondering could i swap a 2.2 from an 1997 outback that is mated to a standard? if it is swappable do i have to swap over all the engine sensors to make it compatible with my ECU?

thanks guys for any help.

should be direct plug and play, except for obviously you will have to take the flywheel/flexplate off the donor motor and put your old one on it etc, so it will fit to your auto.

there MAY(i doubt it) be some electrical connectors that may be different, but just dont throw anything away till your sure, cause you can always use the sensors off the old motor on he new one. etc.

im not sure the differences in california emmissions, more cats(?) etc/ but since you already have all the emmissions equip, just make sure it stays with the car when you swap it.

you wouldnt want to swap ECUs cause im sure there is something in the programming about california emmessions...but now that i look, your not in cali, so...i dont know

ha! yeah man def not in cal. awesome. thats great because i found a parts car for $600 and runs fine, but has no paper work.

and yes im trying to keep the stock ECU to make this project as simple as possible

thanks green97gt.

woot! looking forward to resurrecting my legacy

will post pics soon!

the only issue i see is that you will be downgrading from a phase 2 2.2 to a phase 1 2.2 which could lead to problems, cant say for sure that it will or will not just bolt in and work fine, but i do know there are substantial differences between the motors.

i know for sure that the cylinder heads are a bit different, the exhaust ports, only thing im not sure about is the mounting pattern to the transmission, should be the same...

anyone try a swap from phase 2 to phase 1? im only swapping the engine long block, not any electrical components, and i also figured i could use the same intake manifold, and swap to the dual port exhaust.

i would check on Nasioc, its a pretty specific situation.

found some more info...

1999 2.2 Liter Phase 2 Engine Enhancements (from endwrench article H-4 and H-6 service): All 2.2 liter engine for 1999 are the Phase 2 design. The 2.2 liter Phase 2 engines are a SOHC design, with a newly-designed cylinder head. Changes in the 2.2 liter Phase 2 engines are as follows:
The engine and transmission are fastened with six bolts and two studs.
The thrust bearing has been moved to the number 5 position.
The oil groove in the number 1 and 3 have been changed to supply additional lubrication to the crank journal.
Additional Phase 2 Engine Features
The cylinder head is a two-rocker shaft, solid type valve system with roller followers.
The valves are positioned at a larger angle than previous model years. The intake valves are positioned 23 degrees off-center with the exhaust valves
found on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine

so does 6 bolts and 2 studs on the phase 2, mean that phase 1 and phase 2 are incompatible?
in searching more it seems that if this is the case, then the starter will only have one bolt to use... not cool.

also found this thread which helped alot:

just what i have been able to find out for the past week... :smt024

comments always welcome guys.

no that doesnt mean it wont bolt up, it just means it used more bolts. you dont need to use all the bolts. you are fine with just the lower studs and upper bolts, but you can use more if you want/can. make sure the studs are only in the engine or the transmission before you try and put in the motor, so u may need to pull out a set from one of the other so they dont hit.

you the same bolts to hold the start in as you do right now and you wont have any issues at all.
