problem with clearcoat

well i took decals off my doors and the sticker residue was left on it so i went after it with a scotchbrite green scrubber pad and messed up my clear coat...am i able to just reclear coat the doors or do i have to repaint?

btw i have used these on my car before with no problem but they were old ones and i wasnt thinkin

How badly did you mangle the clearcoat? Did you get to the basecoat that is under it? If not.. you might be able to take some 1500-2000-3000 grit sandpaper and WETSAND that scuffed up clear coat back down.. then polish / buff it out.

i would start by trying some rubbing compounds and polish before going to sand paper.

Yeah.. definitely try some rubbing compound and stuff before hand. However, most rubbing compounds I thought were around the 1800-2000 grit range. So regardless... it all depends on how deep you mangled the clear. Post up a pic or something.. and let us know how deep it cut into the clear coat.

^ there are several much more aggressive than that, IIRC there is a turtle wax rubbing compound in a red can that is really quite rough. using it alone will leave a your looking like you sanded it. but thats why you have to work things like that in steps.

first i'd say try meguiars diamond cut 2.0 rubbing compound... if that doesnt remove the scratches from the scothbrites i'd try 2000 grit wetsand and then retry the compound. it should come out with that. sanding a lot though will really thin out the clearcoat if its a oe paintjob and could result in the weather/sun/etc breaking it down to the point where it will need to be repainted. good luck

i used some wax on it yesturday and now it went from grey back to silver but you can tell when the sun shines on it...the spots are kinda dull and the rest of the car shines

where do i go from here?

sounds like some of the scratches have come out, but there are some still under the glossy(in the shade) surface. basically you've polished out the top layer of scratches and thats why it looks good in the shade or not direct light yet in direct light you see marks... basically you need to do more polishing with a rubbing compound to get the deep scratches out. using wax only can do so much good because its basically non-abrasive. any detail shop should know exactly how to get them out, but sounds like a little coarser compound is needed, followed by the wax you used yesterday
