Ok guys, now i dont know about all of you, but i sure do now about some of you. And what i do know is that our cars have the potential to make some serious noises. here.. there.... everywhere? every single day, i seriously find myself either finding a new noise, or just getting SO freaking tired of hearing the same weird annoying noise over and over again every time i start my car.

THE reason i wanted to start this topic, was because i believe we all have our own different unique stories of particular noises and how we solved them, or maybe how we cant figure them out, and we want to inquire and not feel like a noob for not knowing the noise. So, the fact that most of our cars on this site are around 15 years old give or take, i think we are entitled to sharing our stories on particular noises/problems we have faced with our legacy's. and hopefully it can be of benefit for people that either think they have a major problem noise, or someone who just wants to get rid of a certain annoying noise he hears everyday and someone else might know a remedy.

you guys tell me if you think this is a stupid idea, but all i know is that i have had some noises come up recently that ive been able to conquer, and then others i just want to kill myself everytime i drive....

here i will be the first to describe something haha :smt027

About 3 months ago, i was driving from my girlfriends house back home, and an extremely LOUD tapping noise had began to grow louder and louder. it did not sound healthy whatsoever and was actually quite frightening seeing how two weeks earlier i spent over $2000 to rebuild that exact engine. SO, towed it home, did some research for a few weeks, and came across this site...

http://www.lovehorsepower.com/SubaruDoc ... eplace.htm (http://www.lovehorsepower.com/SubaruDocs/LashAdjusterReplace.htm)

and there was my exact sound recorded online. and an exact analysis of what it was, and the way to fix it.

the loud tapping noise, was coming from the drivers side valve area. it ended up being that my lash adjusters went bad that are the significant parts of our rocker arms and their ability to work properly(and quietly  ). Got everything done and replace, and the noise was gone

anyway, if any of you are tired of this noise then there you go.

one thing i got to say, is that im tired of the noise that is like a sewing machine that comes from our engines. anyone know how to solve this? maybe make our engine purr a little bit more then it makes a ruckus

My engine makes the same noise from the left bank towards the rear. But, mines a 98, and a GT, so solid lash adjusters, and they are all adjusted to within .001" of perfect. Checked them all when I did the head gaskets. Sounds like valvetrain but for the life of me I couldn't find anything wrong when I had it torn down.

The sewing machine type noise, if you have headers, is the exhaust pulses running through the tubing and making noise on the thin walls of the tubes. Wrapping the headers helps a lot. Even with my stock manifolds, it made the same noise but much quieter, since they are just tubing as well. If you absolutely want it GONE, adapt some cast iron manifolds from a turbo model (know the newer WRX/STI has them) to your application. But that would be more effort than it is worth imo.

alright. thats crazy i didnt know it was the exhaust  .

and even after i changed my lash adjusters there is still a bit of a tapping noise, is that normal? does everyone else around a 96 have normal constent tapping noise, not loud but there?

yeah subarus make some crazy noises at idle, i hear valve noises on every subie, might be normal since all our cars are getting up there in years, lol.

ive got piston slap when i start up in the morning since it is so cold. also some vavle noise since i have been lazy and not adj the lash since i broke in my cams.

my car takes forever to warm up and my intake is so loud sucking in air when its cold. like some sort of monster street vac!

dont forget to post when you get rid of the noises and how you did it :)

I've got the piston slap too, but its fairly quiet as far as Subarus go and only for the first minute or 2 of driving. No fix for this, its just a draw-back from the short skirt pistons.

My intake also makes a "hoooooooooo" sound at idle only. I fixed it by grabbing the IAC muffler chamber from an Impreza at the junk yard and popping it in place.

I've heard a LOT of Subarus with valvetrain noise, including many phase 2 engines. We've had 3 Foresters in the shop within the past 2 months or so all for head gaskets, and they all had valvetrain noise.

I take back what I said...there is a fix for the piston slap, but it involves replacing the pistons (2 & 4) with slightly larger diameter ones. So yeah, better to just live with the noise.

so my valve tapping and engine chattering is still around. i know i have an old engine, but it still kinda bugs me seeing that i just rebuilt my engine 4 months ago. and i know it is a characteristic of our engines to have some valve noise, but i was wondering...

should i use some Lucas oil stabilizer?

this is what it says it will do...

"For preventative maintenance, Lucas Heavy-Duty Oil Stabilizer virtually eliminates dry starts and wear. It extends oil life and lowers oil temperature in any engine, gasoline or diesel. It raises oil pressure and reduces smoking, leaking, knocking and blow-by in worn engines. It also helps to control noise, overheating, leaks and wear in gear boxes."

SHOULD I TEST IT OUT? any input?

From what I've seen, the Lucas products just increase the viscosity of the oil. I'm not really a big fan of oil additives personally, but give it a try, it might work.

ya im thinking about trying it out once, and not using too much of it. but as far as oil for our cars. i have synthetic in it right now, what does everyone else use and why?

My lifter noise seems to occur when i have been driving for 30 +/- minutes. I would assume it has something to do with the oil heating up and thinning out. After the car sits and cools off, no more clicking.

Also noticed that the clicking shows up if i spin the engine up past 5k. I hope i am not causing any cavitation. It's hard to tell. Do the ej22 have windage trays?

im not sure. my valve noise is always there no matter what temp or rpm. i really want to know if i should just try out lucas or if anyone has knowledge that it doesnt do anyhting or if it does damage

no chemical treatment will replace worn metal...

the lucas oil stabilaizer is almost "stringy"...if a fluid can be.

it does fix some noise, like valve clicking on start up, maybe piston slap..of its thick in there.

but its just because its sticky and sticks to the bits. but its not like it makes it better.

^^true, thanks.

now..
i have a wagon. and in the rear, kind of sounds like the wagon part of my car or just my rear, it makes extremely loud vibration noises. has anyone else had this problem? if so what did you find it is?

I've got a pretty bad vibration at idle in gear, and while accelerating (mostly uphill) in 2nd and 3rd gear - 97 LGT with 4EAT 206kmi.

Some times, while vibrating at idle, I'll also get what sounds like something vibrating against the firewall. I also get a clunk occasionally while braking hard to a stop or going over a bump while turning. One motor mount looks good, the other old. The tranny and pitch-stop look fine. Banged things with a rubber mallet - nothing. I pulled the brakes apart and reinstalled - nothing. I'm at a loss.

BTW, I use M1 0W-40, but have used all kinda, and will more than like switch back to Rotella T6, since I'm hoping to be able to do 10kmi+ oil change intervals (pending UOA, of course)

alright guys im a little confused...

whenever i start my engine in the morning, or when it is cold, or has been sitting for a little while, a huge cloud of smoke comes out of the exhaust. now this only continues for about 2 or 3 seconds after the big cloud of smoke. then it goes right back to just clear fine exhaust. its running fine other then some engine noise(which im going to upload a recording of the noise later today). but im pretty sure its just regular old boxer engine noise. nothing crazy. anyway, i just really want to know if anyone else has had this problem and what it could be. my father, and one of my friends think its just condensation in the piping being burned and pushed out the back. idk. i do live in florida..

any input??

i think its just exhaust noise, but you guys tell me. it runs amazing.
