So here is what I would like to do, I have a 95 with a ej22 and I would like to put an ECU from a 96 ej22. Basically i would like to get the OBDII functionality from the 96 ECU for troubleshooting purposes. Anybody tried this?

Interesting idea. I imagine that the ECU would plug in, but I am unsure whether or not the engine sensors for emissions and such are the same. It wouldn't be very hard to give it a shot. Just pull a 96' ECU out of a junkyard car and give it a try.

I would assume the same seeing how close they are in years. Come to think of it, where is the ECU on this car?

Its on the passenger footwell right under the carpet. Just pull back the carpet and undo the 10mm bolts and 10mm nut, and there's the ECU.

OBDII requires some additional sensors to meet their standards/requirements that most OBD-I cars don't have. The post cat O2 sensor is a perfect example. If the 96 PCM fit directly in place of the 95 and functioned perfectly with no CEL/warning codes, I would be shocked.

I guess I would have to figure out what sensor difference there might be between the two years. I would be surprised if it where really that different since car companies were well on their way to get to the OBDII standards by the time my car was produced.

Is this a Legacy? All the 95s I've looked at already have OBD II.

"....manufacturers started producing OBDII vehicles in 1994 and 1995..."

My friends 1995 BK Brighton is OBDII, but with a cable type clutch instead of hydraulic compared to my 1996 BG Outback.

Has an OBD II port but the computer is still OBD I so you cannot pull codes without hooking up some jumpers or something.

I have never seen this. Every 95 Legacy I've plugged my OBD-II scanner into reads it like any other car with full functionality. What scanner as you using?

Autoevo, please post a pic of the sticker on the underside of the hood saying something like "this car is certified for OBD-I for the year 1995." There's so many doubters that OBD-I 1995's exist. I've only seen 3 at the junkyard over the years but never snapped a pic, so no one believes me either.

I will be honest and say that i am not 100% sure that this a OBD I. Unfortunately there is no sticker under the hood that can identify what ECU system this is. I have a feeling that this car had been in a crash and the hood was replaced. I only figure that it is an OBD I is because i cannot get any reading on my laptop through the OBD port. I am using AutoTap Diagnostic Scanner (www.autotap.com (http://www.autotap.com)).

Look under the car and see if there is an O2 sensor before the cat and one after. If there is only one sensor before the cat, its OBD-I. If there is one before and one after, then its OBD-II. Simple.

There are cars out there with OBD-II style connectors but are not OBD-II complient. I just worked on a 95 Jetta that was that way. Had the connector, but wasn't OBD-II complient.

95's obd II have a less used protocol that your scanner might not recolonize

if it was OBD1 i would keep it that way. IMO OBD1 is almost always better, and i like not having to buy a tool to check codes.

I find that with OBD II I can better diagnose minor issues with the car. Intermittent issues that may not trip the CEL.
