Taking out engine for the first time..........

i have a 1995 Subaru Legacy LSI Wagon and i think i blown the motor. Im in the process on takin out the motor and almost done. What happened was that the timing belt slipped and went out of timing and i think i bent a rod. Also i thing i have a blown head gasket. I think that cause the antifreeze was brown and has gew coming out of it. I was tol to just buy a new motor better and easier. Question 1 is when i disconnect the tranny from the engine and ready to put the new motor in when it gets that time, is there a way that the tranny has to go in like if it needs to be aligned before it gets bolted back on to place? Thanks.

what?

if your removing the motor the tranny can stay in place, you might want to remove the top pitch stop mount from it to jack up the trans to make re installing the motor easier.

i would also take some cleaner and or sand paper to those littlestuds on each side of the mating surface. not the threaded ones.

ok i finally took out the engine and dam that was heavy. I have no crane.......... 2 people to do this. Anyways now going to get an engine, what years of other Subaru's i can get an engine that i can install without doing any changing of wiring or anything with the transmission. All I want to do is just drop it in and bolt the stuff together again and turn it on?

if all you blew was the short block any phase 1 2.2/1.8L will work just bolt your heads with gaskets for the right short block and you should be good to go. Basically wiring is only going to control the stuff above the short block and if you use all your original electronics and heads makes swapping easier. If you want to get fancy you can get a 2.5L phase 1 and drop it in with those heads too.

What what is the condition of your valves? If you can reuse your heads you can just bolt them on to any EJ shortblock....

Im not to sure since im in the learning process but if im able to take them out i will take some pictures so you guys can tell me if its ok. Tho i think for myself it will be eaisier to just swap. Since it took me that long to take out im starting to get lazy. LOL

Engine in a subie, takes ~75 mins once you know what ur doing, and with the right tools, in the 26 months I've had my car, I've put on 55k miles and the engines been out 4 times lol

Yeah they're surprisingly light - course they don't feel that way when you and a buddy are manhandling one out of a car. I did that once at a junk yard, not fun. Now I go to a nearby junkyard that's paved so I can bring in my engine lift - so much easier. I highly recommend you replace some inaccessible seals on whatever engine you are going before the install:

- the oil seperator plate with the updated part & updated hex screws (dealership parts guy will know about those)
- as well as replace the rear main seal
- oil seal on the front of the tranny

any or all of these can start to leak after you've pulled a motor (none of mine were leaking before!) resulting in you pulling it again!

transmission *should* change. all ej's will bolt up, BUT, if your going to be running a turbo set up, it would be a much better decision to up the tranny :smt023

I have been seeing JDM EJ25Ds for sale on eBay for about 1000 shipped. That should bolt in fairly easily.

Would the wiring have to be changed on these being he would be going from a 2.2 SOHC to a 2.5 DOHC?

Hey i forgot to ask this earlier but there's a fwd cap under the hood towards the top left and looks like you can put a fuse in it but does it make the car only front wheel drive?????? and if so will it damage the rear differential? It seemed to be interesting to know.

It's designed for when towing an automatic Subaru, to use it - the ignition needs to be on, a 15 amp fuse in place, and you're in FWD. Your Fuel economy really doesn't change much.

Ok its been 1 month and 10 days since my car died :smt022 Well i was looking at some engines and i was wondering can an engine from an forester fit in my car without changing anything? or if not from what year impreza, legacy or forester will fit my car being on the safe side without changing nothin. Just bolt and goo! :grin:
