View Full Version : Planning on doing the Duty C mod for Rally-X

Always thought this was just theory nobody had done it but I went to my first Rally-X and had about 4 different people tell me to do this but I have questions.

1. Would one of the FOG, CRUSE, REAR DEFROST buttons work for an on/off interrupter switch? I would just buy one of those switches (have 2 defrost buttons... ect.) and mount it in my open slot to the left of my steering wheel.

2. Will this wreck my tanny if I only flipped it on for Rally-X or deep snow?

3. Will it hinder cornering in Rally-X? My front and rear diffs should still let the outside wheel spin faster right?

Should I post this on NASIOC??

You could. But you would get the fastest answer by searching.

I did search and I have read that, it doesn't really answer any of the questions I asked. He is talking about making some resistor changer thingy I dont understand. I'm just talking about the doing the on/off switch mod and I was wondering if the "binding" would be a problem for Rally-X.

Any of the dash switches should work for that as long as you use a relay. Use the dash switch to switch the relay, and have the relay switch power to the solenoid.

Well in the thread we did establish that it's not going to be a problem on loose surfaces so you will be fine for RallyX. It will still bind but the tires will just scrub off the excess in the dirt. I would think the performance would be more like that of a 4x4 vehicle with the transfer case locked in 4wd.

what's a relay? Can I just go to radio shack and ask for one?

The dash switches are designed to be used with relays, so the switch itself is designed for very very small electrical loads.

A relay is basically an electronically activated switch. It allows you to use a switch designed for a small load (like the dash switches, or the engine computer) and use it to switch a bigger load.

Radio Shack does have them, as should any auto parts store. Just make sure you get a 12V automotive relay. You'll also need to do a Google search on how to wire it. The relay has a wiring schematic on the side of it but odds are you probably don't know how to read a wiring diagram. But each of the pins is numbered and its pretty standardized, so a google search should show it. I believe pins 85 and 86 are for the control (dash) switch and 87 and 30 are for the high current load (solenoid), but I can't remember for sure.

oh ok
I'm going to have someone help me with it that has done it before

your car is a 98.
did it not come standard with the VTD auto box?
or was that only JDM models

i.e VTD Auto (same as the one in my car)
has a ~35:65 (F:R) torque split as standard.
the car is very easy to hold in a slide on gravel, wet, etc due to the extra torque to the rear of the vehicle

How much rally-X do you do?
it may be worthwhile swapping the box/TCU etc
mate it with a Mechanical LSD (clutchpack or Suretrak) equipped rear diff for extra bite and hand the back out as much as you need

VTD didn't show up in the US until 2001 and it was only available with the H6  GT finally got it in 2003...

I understeer ridiculously on the street but in rally-x its really not that hard to get sideways just a little left foot braking then back on the gas done. I just don't feel like I'm putting the power down on corner exit but, I have looked at mechanical LSD's but there $1000 or more I think I'm going to do tires and suspension first.

ok il give you that one lol ^^^^^^

So basically the auto that all 03-now LGT's and 02-now WRX's have? I thought about swapping in a wrx auto tranny for the 45/55 tq split and the sport shift but id probably break it from all the down shifts id pull with it lol. At least it would be original

should be able to hook you up with a VTD box and TCU to suit..
it's great to drive with

So are you saying that adding VTD to a non VTD car is as simple as the VTD and the TCU? and it'll work with a USDM model? I haven't heard of anyone attempting this but it's definitely interesting to those of us uninterested/unwilling to swap to a manual.

Well I could but isn't it the same as a USDM 03/04 legacy GT auto? I suppose a WRX one is a different final drive?

So you know that it's as simple as swapping in the tranny, VTD box and TCU? I've never heard of anyone doing that. Are you certain that the car doesn't need to be pre-wired/rewired to accommodate, it in markets/years that didn't receive VTD (ie. USDM 2nd gen legacys)?

I'm not going to say I know for sure wait for Robbks or Jey to answer, but Im thinking like putting an 03 auto tranny in a 02 legacy doesn't sound hard and I know any 00-02 legacy auto will fit in a BD. Going with the subaru lego theory it shouldn't be to hard.

Any phase 1 trans from 90-98/99 Leg's or Imp's will bolt up.
The phase 2 Tranny's started showing up in mid 98, the easiest way to tell if it's a phase 2 is that there is a spin on oil filter on the left side of the tranny. The phase 2's will physically bolt up, but the wiring harness and TCU is different. So you would need to change all the wiring, TCU and add some links to the ECU.
It can be done, but you're better off sticking with a phase 1.

from here:
viewtopic.php?f=70&t=9526&hilit=phase+2 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=9526&hilit=phase+2)

if he's right, that's quite a bit more than just swapping in the tranny.

Duty Solenoid C wont really give you enough binding to negatively affect your Rally-X .. Its never going to be a 50/50 split. Transmission PSI just isn't high enough and the clutch pack isn't big enough...

I just wouldn't have it locked on Pavement as you will definitely wear out the clutch pack. That is why i was working on the variable resistor.. but that didn't work as I would need to change the digital Pulses not the resistance.

Yeah I think its easier to just turn it off on the street.

Does anyone know about the VTD tranny swap? I confirmed all 02-07 auto WRX's have VDT and the 03 and up legacy's but only the legacy's have sport-shift for some reason. Id really like a 03-04 Legacy GT tranny, I wouldn't need to cut a whole in the firewall for the clutch or anything like with a manual swap.

right i've done a heap of digging and this is the info i could find on fitting one into a gen2 legacy

-VTD Box was fitted to Gen2 JDM GT and GTB Legacy (93-98)
-The VTD housing can be retro-fitted to the early 4EAT Boxes and will need the correct TCU to control it.
-The VTD TCU should be plug and play with the gen2 loom (i cannot confirm what was used in the USDM cars however)

IF the USDM Gen2 loom is the same as the Gen1 Loom (engine has a TPS with reversed polarity) then a VTD Auto WRX TCU will need to be used. I CANNOT CONFIRM THIS INFO

there may be a few other issues with speedo drives/ sensors etc depending on what was used in the USDM cars. i don;t know, i only have good info on AUDM and JDM
