Hey All,

So I was taking a road trip this last weekend and this is the first time I was able to really stretch the legs of my car since owning for a year. I have always know that I cannot spin the engine up as high as I have with previous vehicles. I was cruising at about 65 mph and it felt like my engine was screaming (ejj22 4.11 fdr) which was a little uncomfortable.

I want to know what everyone else's experiences have been like rowing through the gears?

1: What is your average RPM at about 65mph?
2: Do you feel comfortable sustaining RPM's above 3k for long periods of time?
3: Anyone have a high reving engine setup?

EJ22E 5MT @ 4.44FD

1: What is your average RPM at about 65mph?
--> 5th gear = 2500rpm
--> 4th gear = 3400rpm
2: Do you feel comfortable sustaining RPM's above 3k for long periods of time?
--> 5th gear @ 75mph = 3500rpm (this is my constant HWY cruising speed)
--> 2nd gear @ 40mph = 4000rpm (this is my constant CITY traffic cruising speed)

I have driven for long periods of time in 4500-5000 rpm (20-40mins) there is no worry. However I do notice how loud the EJ22E is compared to the EJ25D

I know you have a 4.11FD which means you accelerate a tad slower then me but your final RPM numbers in 5th gear should be a tad lower then mine.

Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply.
This topic seems to kinda go back and forth between Engine NA and Transmissions so i apologize if this is in the wrong forum.

Also I do run wheels @ 225x45x17 which I would assume make a change in the overall RPM. I just want to make sure that running at 3500 to 4500 rpms is not going to grenade my engine (assuming that the engine is working in good order).

You have the so called "bullet proof" EJ22. That doesn't give you the right to down shift from 4th to 2nd but it does give you peace of mind compared to the EJ25D head gasket owners.

If I am not mistaken putting over sized tires and rims will change your Speedometer read out since it was designed for what I believe 195/55/R15 but I could be mistaken.

I'v had the chance to see some of the worst condition "L" EJ22E go balls out at Auto-X events. No mods just stock low end torque and suspension. If those EJ22E don't pop going 5k around cones then I doubt cruising on the hwy will be an issue.

Nice. Not that I have any plans to go "Balls Out" on any RallyX but it's nice to have that peace of mind. I still need to beef up the suspension anyway.

I have driven at 3900 rpm for 800 miles straight, no problem.

Well consider that the car has lasted this long with the same gearing and it hasn't blown up yet. So it will probably be OK.

There is really nothing about these engines that would make them highly intolerent to high-ish RPM. They are fairly short stroke and OHC, so not really that much reciprocating mass. Only real problem I can see if you were doing sustained high speed operation (like 80+) would be oil temps. High RPM heats up the oil pretty quickly. So if you were doing that on a regular basis, synthetic oil would be highly recommended and an oil cooler would be a wise investment.

Thanks for the information. I would like to go with some synthetic oil but seeing as how the car is leaking like a sieve I don't want to invest in that oil. Although that may be my next project while i am fixing the various oil leaks. Do these engine have windage trays?

Oil cooler. less then $200 with all the lines and great for hood scoops :D
