Subaru versus VW

I keep getting S*** thrown at me for driving a Subaru because a lot of people around here drive VW's. It's gotten so bad to the point that people will not shut up to me about how great their VW's are. And incessantly talk crap about Subaru.

Now, allow me to say I'm fairly modest and humble, and I'm not one to go out and scream about how great my car is. I mean it's a 1996 Legacy Outback. But let me share a story with you. Last night there was a flash flood here and I got caught in a huge depression filled with water in it while I was driving, water over the hood and onto the windshield. And, at 12:30am, my car almost conked out, but, after putting it onto 1st low, and gassing it, it drug me out of deep water with a current (I had my steering wheel over 180degrees) it saved my ass. And then I come back home, walk into my apt. and get s*** almost immediately for having a Subaru and being slow. So today I'm posting here to see what you guys have to say.

I'm tired of hearing these arguments against Subaru. Does anybody here have hard facts on why a Subaru is a better choice over a VW? Then when they pull the "Audi" card out. What makes a Subaru AWD better than the Quattro system? I've seen it in action, and I like how the Subaru can put more power in a tire than the Audi's. Can somebody come up with something legit?

Note: Today I checked my wagon, there's sand over the lower outer body, and rims, but brakes and engine are clear, the matting under the hood is still wet. And my foglights won't turn on. But otherwise the intake is bone-dry and my car runs like nothing happened.

I just put up with it in my comfortable leather heated seats, 10 cd changer, all working electrics, trouble free engine, ect. for the price of their falling apart 3 series BMW with shoddy mods that broke down every week or so. I just put up with it in my comfortable leather heated seats, 10 cd changer, all working electrics, trouble free engine, ect. for the price of their falling apart 3 series BMW with shoddy mods that broke down every week or so. all I know are that vw owners are some of the dumbest trendwhores around. From Hellafrush fitment, skinnyass tires on wide wheels, now its all about rusted body panels and steel wheels.

If theyre talking smack and they own a late 90's-early 00's VW (golf and jetta especially), their car isnt even german; odds are it was made in mexico.

it's different and has personality especially if it isn't an Impreza. Safe yet fun to drive, Like a Saab really but cheaper to buy parts for. I also love the camaraderie among us older Leggy owners (the cars not nessicarily the people. What I dislike is the fact that the older models don't get as much respect as they deserve. Thats what I loved about Saab. We Celebrate being Saab owners, not 9-3 owners or C900 owners or 9-5 owners.

To be honest one of my favorite vehicles ever was a 1991 Toyota Hi-Ace. Nothing special to look at, no power, soggy suspension. Man was that a joy to drive fast. (relatively speaking)

if its a guy and he owns a new beetle, ask him if he's put a daisy in his flower holder lately, that or if he's got sand in his vagina after giving you all that lip, or he shouldn't be driving and to go back to the kitchen, etc. :razz: Really, no one with a new VW should be talking smack about another person's car; they're driving fwd appliances just like any other person.

I say challenge them to a multi surface race. Have they gone through a winter with these vehicles? Has the interior started coming apart yet?

My advice and what I did with my Saab problems was just say ok and not acknowledge wat they are saying besides that. There is no better satisfaction then being the person they call to come pick them up from the side of the road or shop. Or in the winter when they get stuck. After a while they will try to hid it from you because they will be embarrassed.

Mind you, I'm not all for the bashing, but a good solid start to a reasonable debate. "My cars better than yours cause I can..." is a sure way to find out how others will look at what you're driving as some "kids" car. I've seen a 91 Taurus with 378k on it that ran immaculate except the day I seen it, the owner tagged a sidewalk and totaled the suspension. Does this make Ford the best company offering front wheel drives or 3.8 motors???

If someone gave you a choice to own a Gallardo or a WRX for free? (maintenance and all) Which would you choose? and why? Both are AWD.


Suddenly, the argument for a Subaru just took a different turn. Free is 1 thing but when you have to pay for it, people usually go with the affordable. Me included. I've seen, worked on, owned, driven etc... alot of cars, but only get what I can afford.

The wrx actually....... I hate Lambos, porsches and ferraris, Now if it was a choice between a new Legacy or a 2011 Saab 9-5 Aero I'd go Saab,

STI or a Caterham RS500? The RS500 All the way.

I have brand loyalty yes, I have only owned a Subaru for a month or so now. But it really doesn't matter to me what the brand is if it works and is reliable. Let me refer you to my previous cars list

VW's and Subaru's are marketed to different goups. It's like comparing apples to oranges. however, VAG does include Lamborghini amongst 1 of its makes so you should include them in your comparison.

sure i would be passing up a deal and a half, but i like to think that I have principals. It's not that I don't like VAG but I don't like a car just because everybody else does, sure they cost a lot, look ok, have decent performance, but really, there are cars I'd rather own.

i seem to be missing your point. show me a performance oriented factory Subaru that costs more 60k then we can add it to my dream car list. Other wise it's highly achievable. also I don't like the new Subaru products. They are ugly. I already own one of the Subarus that I want. The other would be a first gen legacy sedan.

That list up there is a list of cars I'd have over a lambo or porsche any day. Porsche design is frozen in time and Lambos lost all their passion when VAG bought them.

I almost bought an audi s4 before I bought my subaru. What stopped me? Maintenance/repair costs and servicability. Both very important to consider in a used car. Obviously I didn't buy the most reliable subaru ever built, but it cost me $600 in all oe parts to completely reseal the engine incl. head gaskets, timing belt, spark plugs, wires, all filters, updating the oil sep. cover and replacing the key fob. Other than that the car hasn't required anything but oil changes. Unless the vw owner has an old sohc 2.0, there is no way they could even touch that pricing. Then consider the basic maintenance items, specialty fluids, difficulty in working on them, there is no comparison in that aspect.
