I have a 2000 Legacy AWD that threw a rod. What year of engines will fit into it? Why won't others work. I located an engine and have the serial number but can't figure out if it will fit into my Legacy. "EJ205BW5BB-15D 821106 DJ 10" is the serial number.

Thanks

What is it out of? Most any 2.5 from that generation, including the WRX engine will work in your car. That engine you have there is a 2.0L engine.

Where are you located?

ej205= 2.0l wrx engine. Unless you run it with boost, it will run like crap. (low-comp engine).

Yes, boost is always the solution for what ails you with Subarus. :-)

2000 Legacy should have the Phase II 2.5L SOHC engine. If you threw a rod, just about any EJ25 short block would work. Since you don't say where you are located, its hard to suggest where to look for an engine. Under your hood should be a plate with an engine model number, should start with EJ25 and then a bunch of numbers/letters.

Auto or Manual Transmission?

EJ251-2-3 short block
SOHC
If there is a fair number of clicks on the new block, take heads off and put new head gaskets on.
You will have to keep your intake and swap cam and crank sprocket from blown engine.
While there replace water pump, tensioner and belt.
I just did the same swap. Used an EJ251 from a 2003 impreza.

Oh, forgot to mention...
Doesn't matter if donor engine is an auto or manual. Just use what ever yours has and swap it out onto the donor block. ie: fly wheel or plate.
Also, while you are there new clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing.
