Quick question, ever since I've bought this 1996 Legacy Outback (wagon) I've had issues with this noise. Every time I hit a bump I have something that sounds like a chain rattle, I can only think of it either being the chassis or the exhaust making this noise. It literally sounds like a school bus with the chains dangling under it when I hit a bump. I've even looked under the car to see if it's that, but no luck in the issue being as simple as dangling chain. Does anybody have a similar issue? Any suggestions? It's damn embarrassing :smt011 when I drive around and I hit a bump and it rattles, sometimes it's good, barely noticeable, sometimes it's bad, weather or stuff like that doesn't seem to have an effect. Anybody have the same issues? Fixes possibly?

I will post a video sometime soon on youtube and link this thread to the issue as soon as I get a chance to do so.

my car has like a million noisees, one way to figure it out is to have someone stick there head out the door right next to the tires and see where its comnig from, i have a noise that souns like that its coming from the right rear somewhere

probably heat shields
or the front control arm bushes (or swaybar bushes)

I would not recommend having someone stick his head out of the car through the doors while you drive over a bump  Seriously it's probably the heat shield - take your foot up to the exhaust and wiggle it around and see if it doesn't make the exact same noise.
