Hey guys. I have been told something I don't full believe, so I'll as you guys.
I was told that if I order a standalone ECU unit, it'll come with the wiring harness. I don't believe so. I also think that if anything, I probably couldn't order one for an EG33 anyways, especially if I'm swapping it into a BK.
So would I still have to source a wiring harness from an SVX or no?
As always, any input would be appreciated and I thank you for your time and consideration.

You probably still will need the wiring harness from the svx so you can get the plugs that plug into the motor harness. Most standalones come with a wiring loom with a connector to plug into the new ECU, but that's it. There is no way there is a plug and play after market harness for what your doing.

Then what are these stand alones like megasquirt that I keep hearing about?

If the EMS is a plugNplay unit then it will probably come with a connector that mates to your factory harness. If its not a plug N play unit it may come with a connector and a loom of wires which you will then have to splice in to your car harness. Or its possible it wont come with a connector at all and you need to source your own adapter harness.

the PNP mega squirt plugs into oem harness by replacing the stock ecu. so with a swap like ours you still need to get it set up to run on a stock ecu first.

im still confused my mega squirt for the svx though. the pnp says it only offers 4 spark signals while the svx needs 6. i really need to bug those couple guys using it how that plays out.... i only think there is a couple actually using megasquirt at subaru-svx.net

Technically doesn't that make Megasquirt a piggyback? But from what I'm getting from you guys, it'll work like a standalone.

^ no, pretty sure it replaces the ecu, just plugs into the oem ecu plug. granted you can buy them as non plug and play kits, but they will come with nothing but wires you have to splice in. they wont have any plugs that match up to the engine harness plugs.

Not so, there are PNP kits available now that you can order with the proper connectors thru DIYPNP.com

yea you can buy "some" connectors, but you cant expect to buy anything that will "plug" into the factory engine harness besides the factory bulkhead harness.

which is why i would recommend doing a harness merge first, then going with an ECU PNP.

the real question is do you need a standalone? its going to be a huge chore to set up and get running right and unless your planning on boosting or something it wont really net you anything over stock. On the other hand an oem harness merge is really quite cheap to have merged 3rd party.

Well I'm going to to push the limits of the EG33 with an NA setup, and I may try to get 3.75L out of it (EJ25 pistons, if they can work with modified crank, cylinder walls and pinning - massive $$$). Then I'm running a CO2 and N2O setup to further push the limits.

your going to want a full standalone like AEM or LINK for that I would imagine.

+1 for Hydra :smt023
...its the only one (so far) that works really well for modded EG33s

How is Hydra when it comes to tuning and user friendliness? And does anyone have a site I can see Hydra at? Every time I search Google or Yahoo for anything, all I get are forum links talking about it and even those don't have a link to it.

Dude what are you talking about? You can buy a PNP kit for MegaSquirt with the N76 connector that your ECU uses. Assemble it yourself and plug it directly in.

^ i guess your not paying attention either. i said it would plug into the ecu, since you disagreed i figured you meant engine connectors (engine harness to bulkhead harness).if you want to get the svx engine in our cars, you need the svx bulkhead harness and you need to merge it into the car so that it can run on a SVX ecu., after you have got that in you can use a PNP kit to replace the ecu.

so you still need the svx bulkhead harness to end up with a useful PNP. Since the OEM legacy bulkhead harness will not plug into the svx engine harness, so a PNP for the legacy harness wont do you any good. that has been my point all along, you still need the svx bulkhead harness to complete the engine swap.
