Where is the best place (either internet shop or any other place to go through for purchasing a new motor??? I need one by next month and found a few sights and my boss at the garage I work at told me not to trust them and just pick up a used USDM EJ25DE from one of his parts guys for $1350. I have found used JDM motors all over the internet for almost half that. What should I do? Thanks

i put a jdm ej25de from tigerjapenese in and i haven't any problems and its been a good year now.. plus it was like $800

I see JDM EJ25s on Ebay for about $1000 shipped. Most JDM engine have less than 60K miles on them.

yup^ mine had 30k

Those also need to be tapped for the EGR system. I wouldn't buy one of them and just slap it in. I would give it a slight overhaul, personally.

i work at a shop and we plan on overhauling it anyways. Do I need to buy the japanese ECU or can I run my stock one?

Stock, you will need your intake manifold, I'm not sure what else.

stock ecu works fine

Just your intake, unless you want to delete the EGR altogether, but that will probably throw some codes.

+1 on the refresh. These engines are freaking clean, but they're still Phase I EJ25s and they still can suffer from headgasket failer. I did headgaskets on mine before I swapped, and the OEM ones were a little on the thin side. But, after looking at the cylinder bores, it made me a believer about how "low miles" these engines (or at least mine) are said to be.

To make it easier on yourself, you can swap over to a USDM intake. Or, you can do what I did and use a lot of hosing to make the JDM one work.

my jdm intake manifold bolted right up..
i didn't need to do anything too drastic...

weird

Talk about tapping a egr, how and where is this done? Just a intake manifold swap is required then? It's like we need a sticky on swapping in a jdm motor, converting it for US standards.

05-05-2010, 02:09 PM
its really just the fact that you need a usdm intake manifold if your car has egr, everything else is pretty straightforward

ok I have a JDM for about a year and a bit now.... and I love it, but I have the USDM intake on with an EGR... I know that the EGR taps in to the heads... if you didnt want to do this is it possible to tap some wher on the headers?? just asking. thanks for any help on this

Does anyone know what you have to do to get one of those twin turbo jdm engines to be legal in cali ?

I guess i will have to pull out a engine layout and actually take a look at the EGR layout of the system. If its really just swapping the intake manifold on the JDM engine i wont have a problem doing this swap myself. Tapping the block, and pulling more engine parts off i will most likely leave to the shop to do.

But then agian is it worth it... I can get a full front EJ22 TT clip with engine, wiring, tranny, interior, RHD dash and rear end for $2000shipped. It just seams like a lot of work though and herd i cant fit a Twin Turbo motor into my US engine bay without modding or swapping to single turbo due to space, then emmissions, and so on... so i dont know! :smt022

$2000? is that for the be/bh? because ive seen the 2nd gen front clips going for $1400-$1800shipped

tapping the block isnt hard..if a 20 year old can do it, so can you!

major differences in USDM and JDM 2.5 are the intake manifold, , egr, cam profiles, and jdm 2.5 have options of AVCS (http://www.drive.subaru.com/Win05_WhatsInside.htm)

so pretty much more power ? but what about smog ? will the engine pass in the states

05-06-2010, 07:38 PM

i dont think much difference in power. will be smog legal if you swap intake and egr.

oh sweet im in california and they are smog nazis here but hopefully ill be fine,

05-06-2010, 07:51 PM
you dont neeeed to swap intake and egr to have it emissions legal

Sambo
05-06-2010, 07:55 PM
well swap for smog ... just to pass then swap back lol

does anyone know what stage 1 cams do to emissions ? or headers or port n polish ?

05-06-2010, 08:00 PM
headers did nothing negative..

Yeah a TT B4 front clip with interior dash... everything really! Get it in a Auto or 5Speed clip. Looks like a freakin deal with 64k US miles but i dont really want to spend a whole lot for a clip and then pay a shop for wiring, swapping, and so on... Its really the little things i dont want to do cause it seams to add up quick and alot of work. I like straight forward plug and play, no hacking wires or anything! Another things JDM is a single Phase so in other words i would fail computer emmissions on my car from what i read on NASIOC of the few guys who did the swap.

AND Yes, i probably would attempt to do the Firewall cut out to do the entire RHD swap in too since it would come with everything to do it... I would thing the wiring would reach on the LHD if i was to keep it stock. Not sure though...

Im sure that the JDM has about 10 HP on top of the USDM... I know its not much but it is more. I know its not hard to tap the HEAD but I dont really want to take off just one head to drill and tap it... thats why I was asking if I could tap some where else... like the headers some were...

05-08-2010, 03:22 AM
^i agree with this, idk about hp, but there's definitely a significant power difference between my jdm 2.5 w/ an auto tranny and my buddy's usdm 1996 gt

The 96 was down 10hp vs 97+ GT's and was tuned for premium, so it's not a good representation what a EJ25 "should" feel like

oh see I have a 98 JDM/5speed.... maybe thats why I saw a difference in power, and ya I only put in premium... it sucks some times...lol, any word on taping the EGR in to the headers rather then the heads....??? sorry guys im going for an Etest soon I just what to see if I can do some thing like that so the check ENG light goes off and stays off... thanks for any help....

you could tap it in to the header. but it would be inconvenient to do. you would have to weld a metal bung in to the exhaust then custom make a egr tube

Pretty easy for me.... I did this on my Mustang before, since Im a plumber. Use a roll of Soft Copper, counts on your sizing but like 3/8" or so... The brass Compression fittings work great. Held for 4 years no problems and sold the car.
