cat converter swaping, will it pass smog?

i need a new cat converter i found one for a wrx locally brand new for 50 bucks, i now its not the same but im a good welder and i can make it work, im just wondering if it will pass smog in ca? they all do the same thing right? just trying to find a cheap way out

I know here in NY, if it is an OBD 2 car they just run the computer on it. '95 and earlier they do a dyno smog for non-awd vehicles, and do a visual check for the cat.

Cali, as I understand it, is very Nazi like with their emissions. If they put a sniffer in your tailpipe, it should pass with the WRX cat.

If it is oem or oem replacement it will pass ca smog if it is aftermarket and not oem or oem replacement then no it will not pass they are the 3rd reich in ca about emissions and if you alter it from stock then its a no go...

Nomad is false as long as it has the same catalyst and is obdII compliant you are good to go, and you don't have to mention anything to the tech either you could slap on a high flow if you wanted.

He is installing an oem replacement in stock location and still keeping the other cat then yes it will pass..

What I said was don't put a non oem replacement (aftermarket not CA approved converter) THEN IT WILL NOT PASS!

Hmmmm alright from the guy who has no experience or the guy who is a smog tech ME. If you want to get into all kinds of crazy details i can throw them all down for you right now and drop a heavy knowledge bomb right on your face. Those rules only apply for techs not back yard mechanics say what? with the exception of obdII cats all new cats installed must be stamped with obdII and if it is it will pass the visual for that part and goes right on to the two speed idle for our cars. Yes I'm a tech sorry I have only done engine conversions and fuel injection swaps for CA cars I don't know shit and yes im a fucking retard... I do what the laws states and yes it applies to back yard mechanics. You just said if its stamped with obdll code then yes it will pass a high flow cat with out it wont and I'm ASE certified to fuck shit up with 15 years of fucking cars up and giving bad advise so there ya go..... smog tech thats good you get a star! did you just get your cert from a box of cracker jacks!
