BD budget diffuser build

Decided to step up and make a rear diffuser for my BD on the cheap. Going for a HKS Kansai/Mature style diffuser.

My material of choice is cheap sheet metal of some sort. Probably 2mm thick that I can bend with a bit of force. I'm aiming for this to be a simple cheap and hopefully effective build.

I'm thinking of mounting it with brackets like the STi diffusers. What do people think?

Heh thanks, but i'm not doing it to sell it. If this actually comes along then i'll post up a DIY for sure. I'll just document it here for now...

Hmmmm.. I'v thought about this and then thought about the STi rear diffuser. There cheap and can be modified to fit with very little work..

Any ways +1 for tackling this job for us.

but anyways back to the thread at hand. How will the sheet metal mount to the bumper? Tabs that mount to the bumper and the sheet metal mount to the tabs.. or.. Just riveted on to the inner plastic edge of the bumper? or...


Also will this work with the GT rear lip on the BD?

Thought about that but it lacks aggression. Since people are finally starting to make their BDs aggressive, I thought the time had come...

The easiest way probably be having a few brackets with tabs hanging off the bodies underside that mounts to the diffuser. That way I wont have to drill holes in the bumper.

There's holes on the stock rear bumper also where the GT rear lip mounts up. I think there's holes that cover them up... I will have to investigate more. I don't think it would look good mounted to the GT lip though. It's too flat and a diffuser needs angle for it to work or look good.

i'd go with the fin on the right. it makes it easier for daily drivers who have steep driveways.

Most WRXs that run this set up are not panned. It's more aesthetic!

I mocked one up with some cardboard, and I was going to use plexi-glass from lowes or home depot.
I am thinking about adding 2 more fins so there is a total of 5 across the whole back end.

Yeah 5 would be better, one on the left side of the exhaust close as possible and one over on the far right side. Start with the center fin with center of the bumper and work out with the fins so they are equal on both sides.

I'm still in debate if I want to attempt another one, I get stuck working on projects till like 3am and never know when to quit.

Yeah I have that same issue. I start doing something, then lose track of time. However, I generally like whatever the outcome is!

I have not had a chance to get out and pull the cardboard back out of the garage to test fit the 2 new fins and maybe make a set of fins that were a tad bit shorter. Maybe now that I have a minute I will run out and play with it and post pics later tonight.

I put on some smaller fins and it looked like crap..
The larger fins look more aggressive.
The tiny ones, look out of place.
I made then about 1" shorter and about 2" less in length, but left the same curves and overall fin design.

I will post pics, but just for reference. It was a little windy and I wasn't able to get everything lined up to good, but all the fins are the same size, they just dont look it.

It's hard to look it in cardboard cause the color and all but once you plexiglass making the real one and spraying it black... It looks amazing! I was thinking how ghetto mine looked in cardboard and turned out great for under $100.

I think it looks much better with the smaller fins. The bigger fins look too aggressive for the legacy. I want to see the finished product though.

I never thought of this. Would be nice if it was a fairly cheep way to add some aggressiveness to a BD, I might want one
