Is this normal? Tranny kicking out of gear at redline.

So I have realized that when I get just about red line, my tranny kicks itself out of gear (Not fuel cut, possibly rev limiter?). I have noticed it does it in both 1st and 2nd, haven't tried in 3rd or higher gears.
Its kinda cool really, but just wondering if it is stock.

BTW the car is a 97 Legacy GT w/ Manual Tranny. 4.11 Gearing.

Tranny pops out of gear when you hit the redline? Sounds like a problem with the shifter fork or something, it shouldn't do that. Or maybe there's too much slop in the tranny mounts?

no that is not a standard "feature", parts of your tranny are either on their way out or your mind is messing with you...

if it does it in both 1 and 2. a bent shifter fork makes more sense

That would be alot better than bad synchros!

I don't normally redline it, so when I did, I was kinda worried. lol

My shifter itself is sloppy, but that stiffened up a bit when I installed new shifter bushings. *Front and rear.
I can still wiggle it in gear a good half inch to inch or so side to side.

Does it do the same thing if you go up to, say, 6000rpm at full throttle and just let off the gas without disengaging the clutch? If so, check your engine mounts and shift linkage.

I went and did a couple pulls and I let off the accelerator at 6k rpms and it stayed in gear. :smt030

The plot thickens...That's weird that it would only do it at redline basically. Realistically there should be almost no difference between hitting the rev limiter vs letting off the gas at 6k from full throttle.

Bent 1-2 shift fork is not uncommon given that its the fork that tends to get slammed around the most, and it could cause this problem, but you would need to rule out excessive drivetrain and shift linkage movement first.

It doesn't seem to be causing an issue to my normal driving. I will just start saving for a 6 speed swap, and when my tranny goes out. BAM! I have a solution. :smt029

i just ripped my transmission in half, i was having a problem popping out of 4th gear while cruising turns out the rear input shaft bearing is on it's way out (way out lol) so keep saving for your 6mt swap no idea what really going on in there till you take a look
