View Full Version : Is it possible to put Front 4-Pots on the Rear?

I have the Red Subaru 4-Pots up front and can attain another set relatively cheap for the rear, is this feasible? I understand that the brakes are biased towards the front but at the moment I can get the red 4-pots for the same price as the 2-pots. I am curious how this application would make the car feel under the different types of braking I would put it through.

My bad if this is a stupid newbie question. I haven't owned my Suby for a week yet, lol. :smt024

BTW, have the 17" OZ wheels...

I take it that this may be the first time anyone has asked this by the lack of responses?

you have to look at the mounting holes. if they match(i dont think they do, i have 4/2pots on my BE5) than you good. i know that the subaru sti rally car has 4 pots in the rear.

worst idea ever. just saying, possible or not it shouldn't be done.

Whatever he did, I hope that I never do the same as I really like this website. Is it really that bad of an idea to go with the dual 4-Pot set-up. All opinions are welcome. Again I am not new to tuning just new to tuning the Legacy.

i reverse my statement of earlier. the subaru sti rally car is 6/4pot.

So is the S402 and the R205.

Subaru rear brakes are deeper than fronts because of the parking brake drum. At the very least you would have to custom mount the brake caliper and you would lose your parking brake.

than you go with a hyd parking brake that is apart of the rear calipers.

^ yea cause then you "get" to spend more money, and "get" to re-plumb your rear brake lines, all for something you "get" to custom mount , that still "wont" work with 4 pot calipers at the front....

Please just go with a set of the proper 2 pots so you don't end up killing yourself.

Unless you think you are capable of designing a braking system from scratch for a car, i don't think you should try straying to far from what we all know works for your own safety.

Great advice everybody!! I will probably either leave them alone or wait for a set of gold set of Brembo's to pop later in the proper 4/2 set up.

the brembos are just a over priced setup. the FHI 4/2pots are awsome. i stop better than most if not all of my sti buddies.

The only time you would ever want a 4Pot/4Pot setup is on a rear engine car. And, indeed, I have seen that... It was actually a 6Pot/6Pot setup, WilWood brakes, on a Karmannghia. I think it had 14" rotors. Turbo Carrodo motor in the back. Separate parking brake caliper on the rears... Most impressive brake setup I've ever seen. But that car was not your average car. It also went for a little airborne adventure on a Subaru drive once... Not sure why.

If you DID want to do 4/4pots, you would have a big issue with your parking brake, and another issue with brake bias. Under heavy braking on a turn, the ass would come out too easily. Go with 4/2's. ;)

It will NOT work. although if you want 4 pot rears you can buy wilwood 4 pot rear kits if you want.

I have brembos now in the front and h6 upgrade with hawk hps pads puts me at less than 2% bias forward. no need for 2/4 pots unless you do serious track. its really about the heat dispersion

I'm sure if you were serious about brakes, you could get ahold of the 16pot brakes that were put on some Volvo prototype car.

Factory 06+ WRX red 4-pots or the earlier JDM black 4-pots are all the brakes you'll ever need. Brembos are overkill for a street/light track duty car and add A LOT of unsprung weight.

ok just to set things straight, you buy bigger brakes for the HEAT CAPACITY from the larger rotor. Any added benefit from the extra leverage/torque the larger diameter provides is just a bonus. That is why track people actually upgrade to brembos, 05 lgt brakes and the like. Its not necessary at all on the street and if you pair it up with a shitty set of pads your braking distances may actually be worse than stock.

What most people equate to "better brakes" is the feeling of the brakes clamping down and slowing the motion of the car; this feeling is primarily a function of pads and to some extent fluid/lines (reduce the "mushy" feeling at the pedal). That's why it is the usual route people take to brake upgrades.

And for the record, 4pot/2pots are another overrated setup IMO. Despite how nice the caliper is, it still uses the relatively undersize 11.4" rotor. It's barely passable for a 2800lb RS, let alone 3200lb+ wrx on the track. Plenty of wrx owners upgrade that to a set of brembos, stoptechs, etc. because of the brake fade. It's another "pedal feel" upgrade more than anything as the fixed calipers allows less flex over the usual floating design. For a street car its fine, but for a serious track car, you find something better.

keep in mind you want to keep the brake bias as close to 0 as possible. I have an excel program that calculates it for me. I have brembos in front and H6 in rear. it only has a 8% forward bias if i match either stock or performance pads in rears + fronts. the H6s are meant to help with the bias. they help for daily driving but with track they over heat because they are still solid discs. if you just want to upgrade pedal feel. go with a sti master cylinder, adjust your pedal, stainless lines, and decent pads. you can have GREAT stock brake performance. I got brembos only because someone traded me for my wilwoods and its easier to buy pads and parts for brembos. plus they'll help a bit more trq wise with the v.8 swap
