What does it take to register a car on the East Coast? Specifically MD, VA, PA, and NJ.

In WV it's a title with your name on it and a photo I.D. from that state.

NJ requires a state inspection but that doesnt take long, but if your looking for fewer restrictions then NJ isnt the place to be...

just got a wagon off my friend from new jersey...you need to sign the title in front of the title transfer person, show proof of insurance, you get taxed if your buying the car but you can say its free and settle the money afterwards...then you have 10 days to get it pa inspected

WV also needs proof of insurance but you do not need to sign in front of the DMV. It does need to be notarized though

Out of state Titles need to be notarised, you need proof of insurance, bill of sale, and photo ID here in NY. Inspection happens after registration.

also in pa you need to show the drivers licenses of all who had their name on the title before and after the transfer...if you call the dmv they quote you $30 but when you actually transfer it they charge $107

Wait a minute... what if I'm the original owner? I don't need to transfer title, I just want to change registration to a state that'll let me register with them...

Sweet, yeah all you need then is the title and proof of residency which will be a state ID. To get the ID you will need some bills in your name to the address you are registering the car. open a free bank account or two. it's a little bit of a hassle but it is worth it in the end. My inspection guy doesn't really check the car out at all. as long as your lights and wipers work. no emissions ect. Are you going to be moving to the area or will you keep the car in CA?

For CT, if the car is from out of state it just needs to pass a smog test, have a bill of sale, proof of insurance, license, and title obviously.

Temporary registration can be obtained without having to emission test, but only for 30 days. You need to have the car smog tested by then. Funny part is, even if it fails, all you do is bring the proof back to the DMV, and they'll re issue you another 30 day pass.
