I was looking on subarugenuineparts for various things (they have a lot of dealership stuff cheap!) and I came across an "SVX key" which happens to look just like the original Legacy Key. Since my dad won't let me have the original, and my copy key is warped, I was going to buy the SVX key. I'm almost positive it would work (its a blank, of course), but I was wondering, what do all the other Legacy owner's keys look like?

Mine looks the same, and my copy key says Nissan on it.

Get the STi key off ebay!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-S ... enameZWDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-STI-Key-Blank_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40016QQitemZ8035691490QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

It would probably fit, and if not then you can just take it apart and put a different blank inside (although you would have to cut down the head of the blank)

By eyeing it up, I do believe it would fit, but I can get it cheaper from subarugenuineparts.com

I dunno if I like it or not though...

mine looks like that too...I think they were standard accross the board until the newer models, however key length is probably still the same, only difference is the "head" section looking all fancy for STI owners. Brand new 06 Legacy and STI key's may be different due to the new immobilizer chips integrated into them.

I went to Lowes. It was free. They only charge for the actual key. They don't know how to charge for just the cutting :P

Subaru STI key blank, Genuine Subaru part, Key blank fits
Impreza 2002-2004,
Legacy 2000 and up,
Forester 1998 and up

my key will fit into my moms 2000 outback, but hers wont fit into mine. the BD/BG keys are a bit wider as far as I can tell.

Still, by taking the STi key apart and cutting it up or doing what they did in the thread I posted you could make your own

NewGenSTi

can always pick up an ignition out of a new car and try to rig it up if you really wanted to use this key as is. lol but thats a whole hell of a lot of work just for a key

Heh, I too got my key off e-bay. (ebayaholic)

I'm not sure if this key will work for BE/BH cars. I bought one for my mom, and the locksmith seemed to think the blank wouldn't quite fit.

I know that when it comes to cutting special keys like this (and some of the others on this post) many locksmiths won't touch it. And forget your local department store! They don't want to mess it up.

I found a locksmith who had about 40 years in the business and he ended up downloading the cutting code for it based on my X key (X key? Y key? whichever it is). My original key was too worn to get a good cut off it.

He also tried it several times on dummy keys first until he got it right and then made the final cut on mine. In the end he only charged me $5 or something rediculous like that! I'd have paid way more if needed!

I'm using the STi key in my BD... it fits fine in the ignition, but it won't fit in the doors/trunk unless you get it shaved down because it's a bit thicker than the OEM key.

hmm.. something to think about. wont work for me because I need to lock my doors with the key, but with keyless entry that would be fine

Yes, I have a BD and this key blank fits. The BE/BH key just seems a bit wider if I remember correctly? It looks like it might still work, but the locksmith didn't want to try cutting it.

My friends father has a key cutting machine. so I will talk to him see what he thinks. They probably made them a tad wider in newer models to stop the keys from bending and breaking. I know my original key is a little twisted. Seems like the door locks are a little funny you have to wiggle the key around a little to get it to open.

I plan on taking one of the door lock mechanisms off my parts car and rigging it into my drivers side door so I can get the keyless entry.

If you guys are having trouble with the keys in the lock, bending, twisting, etc. from excessive cylinder lock; just squirt a little WD-40 in there, and insert the key a few times. It'll loosen it right up.
