Dipstick is near the front of the transmission, on the driver side. There's a long dipstick with a hot and cold range. I check it after a short drive (with the engine running) against the hot range.

Dipstick sits over by the starter on the driver side, just to the left of the brake master cyl. Kind of buried. Check it with the engine warm and running.
And FYI, the dipstick for the front differential is in the same spot on the opposite side (pass side) of the trans. If you have the stock "torque" box, it may be hard to see as the box kind of obscures it.

haha, ive had SO many "professional" mechanics argue with me about the fact that there are two dipsticks for the 4EAT.
then i show them the one for the front diff and they dont have much to say after that.
it never gets old.

Dipsticks for differentials/manual transmission are pretty rare, but pretty much every Subaru has one. Guess those "mechanics" have never worked on a Subaru. :)
