So when I get anywhere above about 4000 RPM and upshift I get a slight grind, but never in the downshift and only from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. Was wondering if this sympton has anything to do with my sloppy shifter, and hoping it wasn't something more serious like....Synchros. Any ideas?

Take it easy with those shifts, synchros are probably not performing like they did when they were new :)

have you check the fluid level and condition? low fluid at high rpm can this issue, also old fluid can lose viscosity over use and cause the bite of syncros be poor

I the transmission fluid was changed about 5,000 miles ago...i will check and see what the level is , thanks. What's a good interval for trans. fluid changes? I usually take it grandpa easy on my ride, just getting up to speed on the interstate on-ramps i've noticed it. if I let the RPM's idle down it doesn't do it and i've noticed that if i angle it a little to the right towards reverse i can get it smooth it 4th. Thanks for the help!

What fluid did you use? The older the trans gets, the more picky the synchros get about fluid choice.

I couldn't even tell ya what kind is in there since I've only had the car about a month. I did check the fluid, looked full and clean. What kind of tranny fluid would be recommended for my car with 111,000 miles on it? Also, I find it strange that it never does it when I down shift, even if it's reving high, i.e. hills, etc. Thanks for the help. Oh yeah, I got my Kartboy Bushing Kit in the mail the other day. Waiting for some time to install, hoping this might help. There is quite a bit of play in the shifter while in gear and when I shift to 4th if i try to go straight back it grinds, but if I angle it a little to the right it goes in pretty smoothly...either way it should help some with the sloppiness. Thanks again!

I hear good things about Subaru Extra-S, and Uncle Scotty's cocktail.

even uncle scotty will tell you not to use his cocktail. alot of people have developed tranny problems with the mix of fluid it uses
