Automatic Transmission Filter

Hey all,
So I've got a 99 Legacy L (30th Anniversary Edition if that makes any difference). Its got a screw-on type filter (basically looks the same as an engine oil filter) coming out the side of the fluid pan. Can this be replaced with a standard oil filter or does it require something specific?
Any help would be appreciated.

you can use a oil filter, forget which one. but i dont recommend it, for long service intervals, since they dont have as fine of a filter material as transmission filters. ATP sells them for around $14. p/n is B198 on rockauto.com

Use Transmission filter.
It may look the same on the outsie, but internals are different

Yep, use the correct filter.

There is an additional filter inside the transmission that you remove the pan to replace. If you have over 100k on your trans, I'd consider replacing both filters.
