Short Throw Shifter Model

just got in my ebay B&M knockoff shifter...i know, its an ebay part, but it feels solid as a rock, made out of stainless. anyways, i was kinda bored, so i made up a Solidworks model of it real quick. figured it might be useful if people want to compare their shifters, maybe get a compendium kind of thing going on with them to know the different drops, and throw reductions. I'll model the stock shifter when i get it out today.

I didnt put threads on...no real reason to do so.

what year is your car?

i'm looking for a short shifter for my 1995 legacy but I'm not sure if newer models will work. But I see you have a BD, same generation as my BG!

i have a 97. MOST subaru short throw shifters are the same, except for the 6 speed in the STI, i believe. kartboy, B&M, and plenty of others are around. I would think that any shifter for a BD would fit in your BG.

How does this one compare to the stock shifter?

Whats the new hight? How short are the throws?

Im not 100% sure on how much shorter it is, because the PO of my car cut the top off of the shifter, making it "shorter", however, reading through the B&M STS DIY, chuck mentions about 3" shorter on his B&M, which this is a replica of. i guesstimated from my original shifter and used chuck's measurement when i ordered my shift boot, at 3" shorter, and it fits absolutely perfectly.

its roughly half as short. the STS ebay kit included some shims and stuff to make it work for a wider variety of cars, and using these, made the throw take more effort initially, but its beginning to seat in now, about 500mi. later, and it feels good, just a bit more effort, but shifts are nice and short.

Im working on my kartboy shifter bushings now, got the fronts in, but lost my return spring in the process, it shot somewhere up in the car, i found it a day later, yet to put it back in its place. it got too hot to work outside in the driveway, so i had to call it quits on the rear bushing for now, hopefully this weekend. the bushings made the shifts very crisp...but almost hard to find gears, because it didnt do anything for the slop...hopefully the rear bushing, and return spring will fix things right up.

lets us know how if feels after your done. Mines not horrible at the moment but am am making a list of all the things I want to do to my car in the next year. this saves me a good bit.

got all the bushings in, and my initial impressions were...ehhh. my shifter slop was bad before, now it is just "not good". The bushings tightened things up a bit, but no where near as much as everyone seems to let on. I figured i would have super precise, great feeling shifting...all in all, it feels about the same, just notchier. I haven't noticed a great deal of increased NVH, but i did put a 1.5lb. knob on too.

I also cut my short shifter down another .75", makes it more comfortable to get a hold of, but makes it farther away from the steering wheel, which i dont see mattering too much on a day to day basis.

So it might be due to the fact that it's a cheap copy then?

shouldnt be, the throws are shorter, which is all it does. everything seems to be fine with it. there are some shims and stuff that come with it, but they dont give any issues either. It is a nice, solid, albeit cheap, piece.
