i have a 1997 5-speed that i recently did head gaskets on and i was told by the last owner that it needed new cats. i dont have much money and im looking to take the cheap way out but still make it threw an inspection test without causing the car to run rich/lean. my question is can i just straight pipe the section the converters use to be in and weld some bungs in the stream for the
O2 sensors and keep the second one spaced up away from the exhaust stream or will this just cause a check engine light and a rough running engine? i come from the diesel world of exhaust where a 4-5inch striaght pipe is all you need so please forgive me if this question seems stupid

Depends on the kind of emissions testing they do in your area. If they just scan the computer for trouble codes, and you can keep the car from setting a cat efficiency code, then yes, you could pass by doing that. If they actually manually check the emissions output, then the only way to pass emissions is going to be having functioning cat convertors.

i know the guy that is doing the testing so if i can just get the computer to read that everything is fine then i wont have any problems. does anyone know which way to way to go about placing the o2 sensors so the computer see's everything is okay, or will i just have to experiment?
