NEWBIE: 2004 Outback need replacement motor advice

Hi all - hopefully I can get some solid advice here.

Firstly - I'm a photographer - not mechanically minded.

My 2004 Outback (5 speed manual - EJ25 Gen4) has just done a oil pump which stuffed the motor - I need a replacement motor and am looking for advice on what will work and what won't. I have been able to find a 2007 motor with only 60k.kms but have had someone tell me it will not work with my car. That said - I would like a little more horsepower and considered a XT25 but got told the same.

My car is with a mechanic - so tech advice would be passed on to him.

Can someone / anyone / the more the merrier PLEASE PLEASE help me.

Haven't really got endless funds - was hoping to get out of this for under $4k

getting out of it for under 4k should be a complete breeze.

unless you live somewhere not shipping friendly? or the mechanic takes you for a ride.

if your in the states any SOHC 2.5 00-04(3rd gen leg) will be direct fit, i cant say for the 05+(4th gen) motors.

i can say that the 05/06/07/08 look(LOOK) really freakin similar. the motor would physically fit, but i dont know about the electronics..someone will speak up

generally if your looking for plug and play, i would stick within your generation to be safe.

are subarus abundant down there?

are the model yr/gen changes different down there? i know they are in japan/Europe...

as well as engines. im assuming yours isnt turbo? and is it SOHC?

while im asking questions, why do so many people i meet think subarus are made in Australia?

Hi - yes they are fairly abundant down here - but supply of second hand motor in 2004 range seems at moment a little hard to come by - hence the questions on using a different year or model.

I think they consider mine to be a GEN4 it was first month of production of new shape (back then anyways)

No its just a NA 2.5 litre.

Really - no they are definately Japan production - I had to wait 6 weeks for mine to be produced as I wanted black / leather trim / and sunroof and manual gearbox

You seem to have more models in the States than us out here - we never got a turbo version here - apart from now in the diesel model GEN5's

On the 2007 motor you just need to know if it has the same sensors as your motor. Even if the wiring harness is different you could just swap over intakes and some times cross over pipe. And some times a impreza motor and a forester motor will swap over.

I think the easiest / most economical swap would be an EJ25 SOHC like green97gt said. I don't think much wiring is needed either on that swap, so shouldn't bee too hard. I'm not sure of much other details on it, but I know a guy around here who buys junked EJ25 DOHC cars and swaps the SOHC's into them wicked easy for fast money.

I thought this too; no idea why until I realiZed "OH its japanese".
