View Full Version : Header wrap... again

I'm thinking about adding a 2nd layer of wrap. I still have the sewing machine sound. I think the tubing for the ebay header is thinner than the Borla header I had. So I may get a can of spray, give it a light coat (1 can worth or less) and wrap it again. Not sure how close it will be to my oil filter, but has anyone tried this before?

I don't know about double wrapping, but a single layer did a lot to reduce the noise on my OBX header. Its down to about the stock level of sewing machine noise :)

Are you sure you don't have any leaks? I would check that first, I know when I wrapped my header it still had the ticking sound until I changed out the gasket between the header and catpipe and sealed it up with some red RTV.
double wrapping seems like it could help, but I would be weary of the lack of space you might have afterwards.

Yes I already fixed all the leaks. Space is my biggest concern if I put another layer on.

Why don't you try this http://www.thermalzero.com/store?page=s ... 7&TreeId=1 (http://www.thermalzero.com/store?page=shop.browse&category_id=7&TreeId=1)

I rather wrap it again

you have single ports though right shane? so I don't imagine the clearance issue would be as bad as trying to double wrap a dual port header.

Imagine the sound of stock unwrapped headers. Then I got the Borla single port header, the sound seem to be the same, MAYBE a slight increase in sound. Then I wrapped those headers and the sound was perfect. When I had all my engine work done one of the things I had done were head swaps to dual port exhaust.... ports. Well I wrapped those right away, now it kinda sounds like my Borla single ports unwrapped.

its not the headers. I wrapped mine and they were dead silent. it is either your valves, or a leak. OR a specific oil thickness is off. amsoil 10-30 makes my valves silent. and header wrap too. all i hear fom my engine is my intake or a very slight squeek from a belt here and there.
what did you end up with for your engine mods shane?

I think the sound is coming from my intake. I have AMSoil 5w30 so that could be part of it too. PLUS theres a small part of my header exposed from the wrap. I think it's all playing a factor. So I'll correct 2 out of the 3 and go from there.
As for the mods I ended up going with were
-OBX Dual port UEL header (wrapped)
-Delta cam regrind
-NGK Iridium spark plugs
-Koyo Radiator
-TiC shifter pivot bushing
-Kartboyfront shifter bushings (TBI)
-Kartboy rear stay shifter bushing) (TBI)
-OEM Exedy clutch kit
-GRIMMSPEED thermal coated PnP 2.2L intake manifold
-GRIMMSPEED Intake manifold phenolic thermal spacers
The car is fun to drive. I think once the shifter bushings are in, I get the problems resolved from up top, get a new knock sensor and tune the car I will be happy. Then my attention will go back to suspension. I'm think about selling my current set up because I want something lower and more stiff....

well I wont tell you about my new car but lets just say i dropped it 3.5" and 2600$ was dumped into mods :-D

i have ALOT of engine operating noise.. its kind of frustrating..
under med. acceleration i start to get a revolving 'rubbing paper together' type sound
sometimes after the rpms drop when i rev a bit.. i get a sound from somewhere that sounds like pebbles being dropped down a metal tube or a slide.. not as high pitched
so wtf? i may blow up spontaneously or what?

Double wrapping is not necessary. Also did you use the Silicon Spray to seal the wrap?

i have mine double wrapped in the area of my filter. also i put 4 cans on silicone header wrap spray on mine. the noise is way down. all i hear is the injectors and intake. have a aluminium skidplate helps as well.

Chuck no spray, but I will once I wrap the exposed area again. part of the short runner come undone. Also I was a 1qt short on oil....WTF!! So I topped it off with some 10w30 which helped. Now I want to do another oil change to have all AMSoil 10w30

That sounds very much like an exhaust leak.
Best way to find exhaust leaks is to look for black streaks.
