Plans for a roof rack/basket

I'm looking to build a roof rack with a basket on it. What is the best route to go? My car has no existing roof rails of any kind. Has anyone ventured into this before? I know I need some sort of rails to build it onto. anyone have some for sale maybe?

well now i have a car with the stock roof rails, I am still interested in mounting a basket that I will fabricate. just looking to see what other people have done.
