View Full Version : Weight of gas

So our tanks are 15.9 gallons. I did a bit of research and found that the weight of gasoline is 6.8 pounds per gallon. Thats about 110 pounds of gasoline!
This is where my ingenious gas saving technique comes in  I only fill my tank about halfway, so thats about 55lb of weight savings and it only gets better with distance! This was formed more out of lack of money than science though

I've only ever filled my tank to full when embarking on long trips, when I know I can maintain optimum velocity (no stop/starts etc).
Pretty much always run on half tank.

i though water was 6.8lbs/gal

Water is about 8.3lb/gallon
Ive had my gas light on for about 45km,and going around the on ramps to get to the gas station I could feel the car slow  I think the fuel gauge is on the passengers side of the tank.
PS: I hate the english measurement system.

I put no more than $20 worth of gas in unless I take a long trip.

I've never had a Subaru that the fuel gauge worked properly (and I'm on my 5th Subie). I _ALWAYS_ fill the tank, and reset the trip odometer. Depending on type of driving I'm doing, I refill again somewhere after 250 miles and before 330.

I always fill and reset the trip odometer. Always. I also figure out my (depressingly low) gas mileage, and keep the reciepts.

I averaged about 24 MPG as of yesterday outta my 2.2. However that is with a rear O2 sensor code. Still thats kinda weak. :(

24 is weak indeed. if i run the hell outta my 2.5 i get 23, so you should be way above that.

2.2 doesn't really get much better mileage than the 2.5, FYI. And winter is harsh on mileage, I've found, really depends on the kind of mileage you guys do. I've been getting 20-25 mpg (mostly around 22) in the winter, and I get about 25-28 summer, but those are pretty short miles (10 miles each way, lots of accelerating/stopping). Pretty crappy, IMO, but I do love my AWD, so I take the hit.
My fuel gauge was borked, it read 1/4 tank at 8 gallons for some reason. Notice how I said "was". After I did seafoam, the problem cleared up and my fuel guage is very accurate. Like...after I did seafoam, I thought I was getting incredbile mileage! I was sorely disappointed
That's really nice to have though, because my trip odo is now ruined (my fault :() but I keep track on the main Odometer anyways (gotta keep my math skillz brushed up :D).
I would do that half tank thing, but its better to keep your tank full during cold weather to prevent moisture (although the risk is much less with today's pressurized fuel systems) and with prices fluxuating, its better to fill up while its still cheap. 55lbs is a lot of weight...I definitely notice how much slower the car is when I'm sprinting up to 70mph with a full load of friends. Weight savings is a great idea, but unless you're sacrificing function, its expensive.

On cross-state trips, I can get 32-33 mpg in my car.
HOwever, recently, I havent' been getting anything better than 19 mpg, city or freeway. :( Then my fuel pump died, and since then, I've been getting 0 mpg, because I haven't been driving that car at all.

Rear O2 code shouldn't harm gas mileage. It only turns on the light to warn you that the cat may be inefficient.
The fuel gauge is on the pump assembly, which IS on the front, passenger side of the tank.
The problem with running low on gas, is the pump can overheat and reduce it's lifespan and pumping efficiency. The fuel in the gas tank actually helps cool the fuel pump!

drive it easier? Maybe you need a tuneup. 20mpg is the rock bottom in the dead of winter (ie: now) for me...I usually get around 25.

When we did the Rally and then the Ice track a few weeks back I think I literally doubled my fuel consumption.

That's N/A 2.2 vs Twin Turbo'd 2.0!

What to tune up though? I did plugs and wires back in the summer. Maybe I could use a sensor or two somewhere.
Phil (BAC5.2) said something about me running 20-50 killing my gas mileage.
And, I'm not as bad as some people, and I still get 20 mpg.

well...20w-50 definitely doesn't help when its cold out, that's for sure...yeah, especially when its cold. But think about it, you have a heavier oil...it lubricates more, but the engine needs more fuel to make itself turn, thus cutting down on mileage. Also, a heavy weight oil for winter would be bad, because cold oil doesn't get into the engine as quickly, and the thicker it is, the longer it takes to protect the engine.
I run 5W-30 in the winter, 10W-40 or 15W-50 in the summer.

I should figure out what the actual capacity of my fuel tank is, since it's got a huge dent in it...

I get between 10.0 and 10.5 L per 100kms pretty steady with a 2.5L. I think that is around 22-24 mpg.
I do allot of work related driving and I am always filling my tank full. I usually let it go to 500 kms between fill ups, but I have made it just over 550 before. But judging by how much it drank at the pump, there wasn't much left in the tank!
My light usually comes on between 450 and 500 kms. Once it doesn't go off under acceleration any more I know I'm getting low!

the tank in my '95 BG is 12.5 gallons.. and i rarely get more than 220mi to a tank unless i am going on a trip where i get like 27 highway.... im getting continualy around 20 in town which is disapointing.. but now that winters over, i get much less cold starts

Holy thread bump batman! Especially considering I have a different car from previous reply, with a working fuel gauge, and a non-dented fuel tank.
Yeah, 32 mpg isn't unheard of. I made about 36 mpg on a 300 mile trip.

no, it's not. It's 15.9 gallons. And you have a BK, not a BG.

The owners manual tells you this? WTF? Are you sure you have the actual owners manual? Every Legacy I've ever seen stats on has a 15.9 gal fuel tank.
Here, look:

(scroll a little way down)
Even all the Imprezas had a 15.9gallon tank.

The low gas light usually comes on when there 2-3 gallons left. The most I've ever put in my tank was 55 liters (14.5 gallons) and that was really, really low.

your right, every source is telling me 15.9.. i figured it out. it is 12.5 Imperial gallons. i guess my copy did not have U.S. Gallons
"1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallons"
it works out to be 15 U.S. gallons and change..
So touche'

Imperial gallons...hehe, wouldn't have thought of that. Does your car's speedometer measure in hectometers per hour too?

I think I get a pathetic 18mpg…
Of course that’s with a 255lph pump pushing 820cc injectors at 75% injector duty cycle combining fuel with 20psi of intake charge at a pretty constant rate… IOW; 18mph cuz I’m always driving my Leg around balls out…
