View Full Version : Trans in shop. what are best options?

Recently the transmission in my car has started to wither and do a few weird things. When in 5th, you can feel the shifter rock backward as you step on the gas and will occasionally pop out of gear. That doesn't bother me as much as the next problem. When I go in to reverse it works perfectly fine but afterwards it feels tough to take out of gear and when in neutral will not engage in to any forward gear or even back in to reverse until after a few minutes of wiggling it around.

I took the car into the shop where they removed the transmission and found nothing wrong with it without opening it up since they didn't do much transmission work. We then took it up to a subaru dealership where they quoted about $500 to open it up and diagnose the problem and then who knows how much once they figure that out.

They then said that they could sell a rebuilt transmission with 100k miles for $1800, which to me seems ridiculous.

So I am at the point where I could try to find a person who will rebuild it for cheaper or I can find a new (to me) transmission for much cheaper. I am just looking for some second opinions here. Also, are there any other transmissions that would be better than the current one from a 99 2.5gt that would bolt up without having to replace any other major components?

Sounds like you have syncro issues.

Best bang for the buck is to call a scrap yard and ask for a 99 LGT tranny. I believe the Final Drive is 4.11

Price should be around $500-800 from an average scrap yard / salvage yard / wreckers with 200-250k km on them. Not sure what the KM -> Miles is.

Or......

You can check your yellow pages for Transmission Re-builders. Usually the process is you drop off your transmission as a "core" item and they give you the same type transmission and you pay a reduced price because there is no "core" charge. Same concept as getting rebuilt axles/calipers.

You can choose any transmission you wish BUT you must match the Final Drive. For the least amount of work I would stay with 4.11 GT transmissions since you don't want to swap out your rear differential.

www.car-parts.com (http://www.car-parts.com) is a great scrap/salvage/wrecker search engine.

Here's one that is located near me which is in Canada but this is just an example.

1999 Transmission Subaru Legacy 2.5L MT 52,551 / km 84,623 $712.96 US

I hope this gives you some insight.

I figured that would be the better option, hopefully I can find one that car parts site was only showing places several hours away and I know there are a bunch more places closer than that

Its not that its not listing them its that theres none in stock. 90% of the time car-parts.com is accurate. If there is any well respected yards in your area then they have a computer and they have the inventory software to accurately list what is available.

You can always call the yards you know about and give it a shot.

Good luck with the hunt and install.

Might be getting transmission from MavX on here but I have one question, since his is from a 97 and mine is a 99 will that make any difference? only reason I ask is because of this:
5MT
It is notable to mention that only Turbo vehicles received a hydraulic clutch until 1995. Also, in 1998 Subaru changed from a push-style clutch to a pull-style requiring minor bellhousing and fork changes.
Gear Ratios: 1st 3.785 2nd 1.945 3rd 1.500 4th 0.994 5th 0.780/(0.735 WRX) - Final 4.11 (3.90 WRX)
Usage: All 1990-2003 with EJ-Engine

I can not give you a solid fact but I can tell you that

1) 98' EJ25D w/ 97' 4.11 5MT work with no issues.

"push (nat asp) and pull (turbo) "

Don't take Wiki to heart do some more research to confirm I am sure the answer is on SLi somewhere. Jey may have the answer your looking for.

Good luck

1 thing I just found recently (granted it was on an automatic, but still) the 99 I worked on didn't have the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. Typically on the 4EAT the speed sensor is about 3" forward from the diff dipstick. On the 99, there was nothing there.

Don't know if that translates to the 5MT or not, but it is worth mentioning.

So I got the transmission but the bellhousing bolt patterns are different. The one from the 97 has less holes than that from the 99, however the ones that are there appear to be in the same place. I'm still hoping for the best and there are no problems with bolting it on. Please further my confidence that this will work.

if i remember right, i think they change the amount of bolts between years, some have four, or six, etc. as long as there in the same place, bolt up whatcha can.

those little pegs can be buggers, make sure you look at the block mating surface, and trans to make sure theres not one on each, ive cursed myself for that before.

From eyeing the mating area it looked like the 4 bolts in there would match up to the two holes on the bottom and the two on the top just that there would be the several spots where there are the lack of holes for the other bolts which may not matter hopefully.

Nasioc "Even though it had a 8 bolt bellhousing , it bolt right up to the older 4 bolt housing.."

Most threads on Nasioc have nothing bad to say about more or less bellhousing holes.

I would say your in the clear.

Nice.. so hows it working out for you now? much better eh?

BenO

quite nice. I got a new clutch too so it is a bit different to get used to and the shifter won't snap back to the middle from between 1st and 2nd which is weird but doesn't really bother me. I also found out that when I drive a massive f-250 super duty where I sit 6 feet off the ground and shifts horribly for several weeks then switch to my car it feels like I am in a ferrari!

You're missing the spring that returns the shifter to the middle gate. No big deal, it's directly accessible from under the car.

can anyone get a picture of where this is by any chance? I crawled under there and figured I would see a spring on one side but not the other, but I saw no springs at all. I checked the FSM as well and found nothing

Check the bottom the DIY. Jaredc posted a pic of the spring and if you look at the diagrams I posted its #17.
