Hey guys, I'm new to legacy but know the GC like the back of my hand, figure I'd register here and get to know the legacy crew a bit better

I've been looking for a daily driver and searching all the craigslists for 200 miles 5 times a day for weeks trying to find a cheap black or white 98-00 5spd Forester... but came up with nothing under $2000 (and that was with body damage). I wanted something that I could sleep in if i went camping but also run at rallyx for fun

Then I found a 98 Legacy on craigslist and the way it was described it sounded pretty rough: 5 speed, failing transmission, 292,000 miles, AC doesnt work, dents, etc. I thought, well its worth a look, got a ride down to Eugene and turns out it was SUPER clean and in amazing shape and drove fine just some tranny noise. The tranny is going out but it drives perfectly fine, i'll probably beat the hell out of the tranny and then swap in a newer one from an newer legacy/outback

Here's what $640 got me:

1998 Legacy wagon, spruce green
GOOD:
- bone stock, clean title, no CEL, current tags
- 5 speed w/cruise and OEM keyless
- 292k miles, might as well be 50k because the interior is so clean
- GT style front bumper, Outback style rear bumper
- paint is immaculate
- yakima rack
- 1/2 tank gas
- original stereo w/OEM CD player
BAD:
- AC needs to be recharged
- rust spot on hood, small dent in roof, otherwise flawless body
- transmission really worn out
- small crack in windshield

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs122.snc4/36461_545500954844_29304073_32104164_6981616_n.jpg

Plans:
- GT/Outback hood - DONE!
- gold wheels (snowflakes or RS 5spokes or something) - Done
- JDM headlights + fogs - headlights done
- EDM gauge cluster
- KYB AGX + eibach springs off my impreza (which i upgraded to coilovers)
- better seats

Welcome! You'll find lots of info here for your car! I've spent hours here looking for new ideas and troubleshooting things... besides the transmission, it looks like you got a pretty good buy!

Yesterday I got my order of green bulbs from SuperBrightLEDs and threw em in.
1. the legacy dash is SO MUCH FUCKING EASIER TO WORK WITH than the early impreza dash. holy crap. i love this car already. i got the gauge cluster out in 3 minutes without scraping and hurting my hands. amazing.
2. the leds are almost TOO green, they wash out the red needles and are very intense. i partially solved this by turning down the cluster lighting dial to medium, and its about right. overall though, i love it

just won these on ebay:

Nice looking ride you got. and love the new JDM stuff it will be coming along. Just curious what part of portland your in?
I was actually supprissed that we got some good subaru parts and service companys in oregon.
i read great reviews for mountain tech in Oregon city for preventive maintnance and specialty subaru work. and then we got RalliTech down by the airport and they got all the preformance/tunning services.
Welcome abord...

well i got the fog lights, headlights, and mirrors in the mail on saturday. so far, so good. now i just need to delve into the wiring. i looked around on here, theres definitely some useful threads. harrymaneuvers recommend getting a 9007 harness that i can cut up and use as a jumper with the jdm pigtails, but my headlights are missing 1 pigtail so i need to see if i can find that or just make something new for it. also my car isnt wired for fogs already (i dont think) so im gonna probably need to run wiring for that

harrymaneuvers

Before you cut them... let me see if I can get Ho from newstars to include an extra pigtail when he sends me my replacement lights...

elislider

picked up an Outback hood (w/scoop) today for $125. sadly its not forest green, dark blue (almost black) but at least thats better than white or red
will get a pic soon

also i'm thinking that its gonna suck trying to get the heated mirrors and fog lights to work since the car didnt originally have either. the outback the hood came off of had both and i could see how difficult it would probably be to add that to the harness. requires more research though

even better news, i took a shot in the dark yesterday and posted a Trade Wanted ad on craigslist to trade my black hood for a green one. 12 hours later and a guy txted me who had a OBP 98 Legacy GT sedan with a spruce green hood he had been rocking for a while. he was playing down his hood, saying it was kinda scratched and stuff, but when we met up it was pretty much mint, paint is awesome. my OBP hood actually DID have some scratches and stuff, so i threw in an extra $30 on top of the trade and he was pretty happy. talk about random perfect coincedence, we both had the color hood the other wanted! so now i have an awesome green hood :)

here are the rules below. read them again and tell me you cant find anything wrong with your title.

Please follow these simple instructions to create your Member Rides thread. Your thread will get locked/go missing if these basic rules are not followed:

1. ONE thread PER CAR that YOU OWN.

2. Your name - YEAR of car - MODEL of car - TRIM - UPDATES date
i.e. Airgne's 01 Legacy GT - Updated 3 Sept IKEA mudflaps

3. Pictures: You should have at least one pic in your first post - not a link to pics - use a hosting service like imageshack, photobucket, smugmug etc. Do NOT use myspace or facebook - those services typically require the viewer to be a "friend" of yours. You may link to an online gallery if you have multiple pics of parts to be installed etc. Try to keep the pics to a viewable size.

4. Mod list: goes into the first post in your thread, and will be seperated. i.e.
Exterior:
Jdm Lights
Engine:
Cold air intake
Suspension:
KYB GS2
H&R's
so on and so on. look at my members ride for a example more in detail. It makes it easier to track your progress and saves people from looking all over the place for what you've updated.

5. Last, have fun with your MR thread - it's a journal about your car and your adventures with it!

so anyone else have this problem? on the jdm headlights the lows are both the low and high bulb and they are REALLY dim. then when i switch to high beams it goes to the normal high beams and it seems normal. im thinking i may have accidentally switched something? or if someone else has experienced this then tips would be great

Navi271
08-11-2010, 02:46 AM
umm, it sounds like you switched wires around. Check out the DIY jdm headlights on the DIY thread. It's definitely not supposed to be doing that!

elislider
08-11-2010, 03:09 AM
i did, thats the guide i followed. normally i'm really good with wiring, i draw it all out and make extra sure im doing it correctly, i clean, flux, solder, then heatshrink the connections... i mean, i did the wiring myself for the jdm sti swap in my impreza, so i didnt think this would be so hard. guess ill have to go back to the drawing board and take a second look

Navi271
08-11-2010, 03:27 AM
Yeah, I suppose back to the drawing board... It sounds like you know what you're doing, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

harrymaneuvers
08-11-2010, 10:15 AM
When that happened to me... It was because i had my high beam (i believe... it could have been my low beam but i dont think it was) and my power wire were swapped on the pig tail... just open up the back of the pig tail and take both wires out and swap positions...

It would make my low beam very dim but my high beam seemed fine.

I just swapped those two wires and it has worked great ever since.

that sounds promising. are both high and low beams supposed to be illuminated when switched on low? or is it just the low beam?

On the JDM vehicles they both stay on when switched to High Beam...

From my understanding... the switch in the USDM cars is different and shuts off the low beam when the high beam is activated...

To solve this... you simply have to take the low beam wire that comes FROM the headlight and ground it to the chassis. Most people run it up to one of the headlight mounting bolts.

interesting. that would make sense though, since the usdm are just 1 dual-filament bulb, you wouldnt want them both on when high beams are switched on, but obviously the more light the better so with 2 separate bulbs just keep them both on.
thanks for the info. time to head back to the headlight wiring thread and redraw my patch harness diagram

elislider
08-14-2010, 03:12 AM
alright I figured it out. for some reason the JDM Projector DIY thread had the power and low ground switched on the jdm plug as compared to mine. once i switched those everything is normal. i still need to tap into the corner light steady current or ground or whatever for power to the marker light

transmission is going fast in my car. it kicks violently out of 4th gear, and 3rd and 5th sometimes pop out randomly

elislider
10-23-2010, 04:43 PM
so i got my impreza running again finally, so its my DD now while i replace the transmission in the legacy.

the transmission in the car is a 3.9 ratio, so my current plans are to swap in a 4.11 ratio 5mt and then upgrade the rear diff to a 4.11 MLSD from an early JDM Impreza. i already have the diff and axles and i'm going to look at a transmission today.

elislider
10-29-2010, 02:41 AM
crashed my impreza. that means is double-time to get the legacy fixed. picked up some front seats (mine were worn out and bolsters were crap) and a 4.11 transmission from a 98 legact gt. already have the rear MLSD (see previous post) so its gonna be time to swap a transmission pretty soon. need to buy a clutch for it too, since its all worn out. also will be swapping on adjustable KYB AGX's too

elislider
11-15-2010, 03:54 AM
today and yesterday:
replaced the rear main seal
resealed the access hatch on the back of the engine block
resealed the access hatch on top of the new transmission
swapped in the new transmission
swapped AGX's on (tein pillowball tophats on the rears)

tomorrow:
- JDM smoked rear tails
- 2.5RS exhaust axleback
- pictures :)

car has been driving great. with the MLSD and new tires on some silver wrx rims, i cant even get it to slide in the wet! love this thing :)
got the JDM tails on maybe a month back, and just hit 300k the other day
also a dusting of snow recently

coming soon hopefully:
-rear wing
-jdm fogs
-jdm front bumper
-jdm grill

Hey I have seen that driveway before!!! (talking about a few pictures ago)

Man we need to meet up when I come up there again... I think it is going to be around the 8th of next month. You down?

Also, if you need help sourcing any thing for your car... there is a subaru only dismantler down here that is amazing... they even offer a 3 year parts AND labor warranty on all of their parts...

Rather than replacing a burnt wheel bearing for $300... I got a whole hub assembly and steering knuckle for $90... and if the bearing goes in the next three years... they send me a new used one and pay $55/hour shop rate to get it swapped out!

I cant wait to see your ride... it looks fantastic!

to be honest if i were you id splurge on the slightly more expensive ones that are darker green. the ones i got (same as the ones i linked, i think) are light green...

The ones you linked only come in that color green. Not sure what darker ones you're referring to.

i was just referring to any other seller of green lugnuts on ebay. the particular ones i got (same as the ones i linked i think) are a really light green and dont necessarily match well with Legacy dark green

Just got in a JDM L/7 grill, RFRB rear hatch wing, and GTB bilstein suspension setup. thanks to harrymaneuvers for picking it up for me! havent installed any of it yet, still deciding what i want to do with the parts (this legacy or another in the future). I was really impressed with the strut diameter on the bilsteins, it's pretty impressive even compared to some tein coilovers i used to have.

car just rolled over to 308,000 miles yesterday

also just swapped on some 05 wrx wheels the other day

and the bilsteins

I know right! I had the same reaction.
What springs are you going to use with them?

ScoobySnack

What struts and spring combo are you running now with your bk? I see you have brought a new setup are you going to sell the other ones?

elislider

right now i have adjustable AGXs from my swapped '93 impreza i used to have, combo'd with Eibach lowering springs. i swapped over some legacy rear tophats to the agx's since the legacy and impreza use different rear tophats. the legacy sits a touch too high in the front for me, and a touch too low in the back for me. wish they were height adjustable, thats what i love about coilovers... shouldnt have sold my coilovers when i sold the impreza! (jdm BG5 tein flex's)

i dont know what i plan to do with the Bilsteins. maybe swap over the eibach springs? im also looking at a set of GD WRX SPT factory option springs right now, might do those if they arent taller than the ones already on the bilsteins

harrymaneuvers

I think you know who would be interested in those springs if you dont end up getting them.

note to everyone everywhere: don't ever buy aluminum lugnuts. i dont even know why they make them in aluminum. i put a set on my car and the stress of torquing them caused the some of the threads to fuse onto the hub studs. Muteki, etc, lugnuts are forged steel or other steel, and only cost $60 or so

Baddog
06-19-2011, 02:12 AM
Sadly Muteki STILL does NOT make a dark green lug nut. They are piss green. Not to mention on a factory rim a 1.9" lug is going to stick WAY out.

elislider
06-19-2011, 02:29 AM
they make a closed end and open end from what i could tell

For me personally those lugs will not go with the dark green accents I have. At least I don't think. I may just have to hunker down and do it.

Sorry for the Ride jack.

elislider
06-19-2011, 11:21 AM
They would probably go better than what I initially had which were a very light pale green. Plus they were so cheaply anodized with color that just the force of putting a socket over them would scrape the paint off. So I'm glad I trashed those crap aluminum lugs and realized what kind of lugs I actually need to get

ScoobySnack

Yeah those agx adjustables are nice but I was not sure what springs combine them with. I want my car to to sit lower then stock and still have decent comfort. It seems everyone lets the stock 04 sti red struts combo, however, they are expensive for take offs that ppl want for them!

elislider
06-23-2011, 02:04 PM
yeah they are an easy find since lots of people have them and they are direct bolt-on, but people also want a lot for em. i dont mind finding Impreza stuff and just swapping over rear tophats, thats what i did with my AGXs, though they are set up for an impreza which isnt as ass-heavy as this legacy so the legacy sags in the back. basically its dumped and doesnt look too bad, but it looks a bit off (to me) because the front sits higher

bought the lugnuts yesterday!

well nothing new to report, fixed a rattle and installed a couple new speakers but besides that i haven't washed it in months and it recently hit 316k
it has always overheated fairly often during the winter months (but never does the rest of the year), i think the thermostat is shot but i havent replaced it yet

couple recent shots
