View Full Version : EJ22E swap into a EJ25D Legacy BD 96' 4EAT: issues? :( Yeh.

Basically, I know it'd bolt up and all that but:

The EJ22E is from a 5MT, while the EJ25D (my personal car) is an 4EAT. There is no EGR on the Ej22E besides a air pump.
I've heard that I can not run the EJ22 properly since it was mated to a manual and I'll be poping it into my 4EAT; auto.
the EJ22E is from a 95' and my GT is a 96 (reason why auto.).

Since theres no EGR on the EJ22, it will trigger a check engine light on my subie GT when swapped overr right? Will I be able to swap over emissions etc from my RIP Ej25D to the EJ22 to avoid this (ultimatley I don't care, I just don't wish the ECU to retard timing/spark to reduce lean/rich if it is not properly detecting it.)

Other way I've heard is to do a bypass, but hm?

besides this, are there any issues??

Some reasons why I consider doing the EJ22E:
It was basically free (really!)
I have the entire car the Ej22e is in, and I can pop off any other needed parts with ease.
Spare parts. ;)
Increased reliability.
Increased MPG
SOHC design. Easier to do timing belts and such.

Reasons why not:
I'm no longer part of the EJ25D club. D:
Can't wear the GT badge (or can I...!)
Lose of 20hp or so.
I get to miss headgaskets/cooling issues.
The Ej22 looks dirty. D:

But I'm also debating: on getting just a EJ25D shortblock (I found one!) and swapping my heads over, and intake manifold, and redo headgaksets, get heads inspected/milled. basically a rebuilt Ej25D.

I just dont' know the current condition of my EJ25d, because I did not stop it after it happened; I instead ran it a bit hoping it was a stuck lifter/needed some much needed oil circulated; dont' think it is. something in the crank went. not a rod; but a bearing most likley due to metal on metal contact and no LUBRICATION! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCQ9vmz5cJ8 Agh!

So, guys what do you think I should do? Price is an issue and i'd perfer to keep it under1k. I may do my own labor in the engine swap; and pay a friend or two to help me since it's atleast 6/7 hours of shit/yelling at subie engineers.

Also: Should I pull the engine out w/ transmsision? I'm thinking of doing it with the Ej22E (it's still in car) because IMO the syncros in the 5Mt is shot (and it's FWD, no one wants it in subie world.) but I'm thinking I'd be leaving the 4EAT when I do the swap for the engine in my GT.

I went the other direction, to a 'D' from an 'E' engine. while my EJ22E ecu ran the new motor OK, I swapped in the correct ECU and haven't had any problems, and my fuel economy went up slightly. So that's what I'd recommend, use the ECU from the 22e so you don't have any lights.

One of the biggest things I noticed going from a 22 to a 25 motor is the TORQUE! Immediate instead of having to floor it to feel some. And the fact that the engine doesn't run out of breath like my old motor did at ~5k rpm. The DOHC ecu raised the redline to 6500 as well which can be entertaining, as my motor pulls hard till then. Something I didn't encounter, but you will, is your transmission is a 4.44FD which will affect your car's acceleration quite a bit with the smaller engine. (in a good or bad way?) My auto had 4.11FD and I kinda wish I would have swapped in the 4.44.

Why did I swap? Because the 22e always leaked fluids (mostly oil) and finally blew its headgaskets. I get about 340-350 miles per tank with the 25d, and used to get about 380-400 with the 22e, both with mostly highway driving but I do get on it a bit since the 'D' is a fun engine (but totally not suited for an auto).
