RWD for a week?

So I was wondering, if I just leave out the fron cv shafts on my BK, what else would I have to do to safely run RWD for a week? I just feel like getting sideways like I used to in my Starion for the upcoming rainstorm.

pretty sure that you can only do this with a manual since most automatics transmit most of the power to the front wheels and manuals have a equal 50/50 split going to both front and back wheels. but yeah Ive driven my old manual subie with RWD... its weird and awkward at first, then you get use to it, then when you switch back to AWD, it rocks and you can handle the road and its awesome. bad part is that you cant do burn-outs when you put it back to AWD...

Yup. Also welding the spider gears solid in the R160 should help.

So to summerize.
0) Rear everything you can about MRanlet's RWD conversion

3) Welded spider gears in the Rear Diff
4) Pray that your 5MT can handle the driveline shock.

you HAVE to deal with the center diff if you run RWD. The center coupler will burn out and fail completely if you do not weld it up, then you ahve a nasty mess and no forward or backward motion (other than gravity pulling you down hill or whatever horsepower you can get out of people pushing you).

Personally, if I were to do a RWD conversion, I would look for a manual transmission out of an RX-7. IIRC, they will bolt up to a Subaru since the bellhousing is the same, you'll have to modify the tranny mounts, and a custom drive shaft... but it'll work. Plus, you get better gearing for RWD.

I intend to do this some time... Should be awesome fun.

yup i did have to replace the tranny after i did that, it was a good thing i had one on hand. messing with the driveline can get expensive quick... :neutral:

If you drive it right, you can get the Subaru AWD system to kick out the rear end, especially in the rain.

The STI will drift nicely, but that is mainly because it has 300HP and a CLSD in the rear. As far as I know, the DCCD cannot direct more than 50% power to the rear (i.e. completely locking the center diff)

you were misinformed, the 6speed can do a 35/65 split and the DCCD can bring it to a lock at a 50/50 split

The old 5 speed DCCD's were like that. They were either open, 50/50, or in between. A friend had a swapped GC with a 5 speed with DCCD, and the suspension was ultra stiff. He had an open front and rear diff in it. When he went up his hill with the center diff totally open, the car would tripod, and he'd lose all forward power, and the tire off the ground would just spin freely.

So, not all DCCD setups are the same.
