what are the green plugs under dash?

I have a 96 legacy outback and there are 2 green plugs under my dash that look like they go together, but when I plug them together my check engine light flashes like crazy on my dsash. What the heck are they for?

they are used reset the ecu.

I don't think its used to reset the ECU, however you may be able to do that somehow with it. The green plugs are the 'diagnostics' plugs, or 'test' plugs. They are used to determine various things that could possibly be wrong with your car or help aid you in figuring out whats possibly wrong with your car. You only use them under certain circumstances. There is also another plug under there that has a wire attached to it with a little metal prong. That one also allows you to create a 'test' loop or sorts.. i've only used it once before.

to make the procedure much easier, i have both sets of connectors connected/ disconnected via a pair of switches mounted under the steering column.
you don;t need to look for them, or have un-sightly wiring hanging down.
