1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Sedan
ej25 twin cam, 4EAT auto (stock)
I decided to add prices and places I got the parts. I have had so many people ask where I got my bumper and what not. I also listed the years I got them since the market does change. (added 2-27-13)... Got the idea from argaretty. :smt023
This is my weekend ride. I used to work for a friend that fixed insurance totals. Before I got "White Lightning", I wanted a 2.5 RS Impraza REALLY bad! Part of the reason was my Silvia was getting me in trouble driving every day (street racing) and I wanted a 4 door. I had worked on and driven tons of Outbacks, but this was the first GT I got to drive. When it came to the shop, it was hit in the front and in need of a bumper and some metal work. I drove it out to State Patrol Inspection and feel in love with it! It was a one owner and super clean inside!
This was by far the nicest car I had ever driven that felt solid. I asked the boss how much and he said "no, it goes to the lot. I'll get you another one". I said fine, but "this is what I want, a limited 98-99 GT with an auto". The auto would keep me from racing and I liked the darker interior color of 98-99. I looked, he looked and finally one day one came up at the auction. This was about 4 months after I first drove the white one. It was bright red and that was the one color I DIDNT want. It was hit in the right rear door, but would take little to make it drive and parts cost was low, it was all labor. It sold for more then I could afford.
I finally asked him "how much for the white one?". He thinks about it, knowing I wanted it, but knowing that he could make a lot from the car. He says $4800 and it's yours!" Mind you this was 2007 so she was worth about 6-7K. I said ok, I'll see what I could do. I had 2K saved and then got a car loan for the rest and called and said "if you sell it, I'll quit. I got a loan and will have the check by the end of the day!". He was shocked, but said ok. I got my car the next day!
I got it with about 164K on the OD. It now has 244K and still going strong. I did have a slight problem with the original motor and spun a bearing, but thats the only thing other then the normal stuff. She now has been blessed with a plethora of JDM parts, and any unique OEM parts I can find. I dont plan on selling her any time soon, so I hope who ever I marry, likes it!

HAWT!!! love those sky shots. And I still say sand and re-clear your spare tire cover. Add a layer of 3M protective film and your good to go.

This was almost 3 years ago... I T-boned a Ford Fusion that made an illegal U-turn in front of me... Guy was a moron... This was his rental because he wrecked his truck the week before and totaled him SUV 6 months before...
$4000 damage to my GT. He tried to buy me off for $300... :smt021

This is a late update, but an update none the less...
I decided to replace my flaky paint driver side trim, repaint my rocker cover and also replace the crappy fender I had bad body work done on.
Before... the car was wrecked before I got it and they didnt use the right adhesion promoter... :smt013
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/IMG_0885-1.jpg
I also take my car places it shouldn't go so my rocker covers were hashed...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/11/IMG_0887-1.jpg
Found out that both doors were replaced at one time. They did a nice repair though!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/11/IMG_0889-1.jpg
What not to do to hold your fender and bumper in line... I didnt care when I fixed it a couple years ago, but it started to bug me...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/11/IMG_0894-1.jpg
And I also bottomed out the bumper on a road gutter out in the woods and I just told myself I would replace the finder all together...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/11/IMG_0896-1.jpg
Ready for the new fender...

I know huh?! I looked at the guy and said word for word... "Dude, my bumper cover cost that much!"
And thanks!

..Hmmm no offense, but that's NOT $4000 worth of damage lol! I hope that's just ur insurance quote and not what you paid to change a fender, turn signal, and add a small patch of bondo on the bumper with some paint:-o ..pulled frame rail with or without welding, no way that's $4000... jmtc:-S

I had 3 estimates and the lowest was at $3,700 and the most at $4,300. GMAC paid me $3,900. All the body shops missed the second bend in the frame behind the crossmember. I'm also a pain in the ass when it comes to parts. They tried to sell me aftermarket body parts and they are crap. The lights are ok, but aftermarket Subaru fenders are peaces of crap. I've had to install way too many of them.
Parts list:
Bumper cover
bumper reinforcement
right fender (I did fix it and the time I put into it, I should have just got a new one.)
right fog light
right marker light
right head light
bug guard
base coat, clear coat, primer, sealer, filler, other odds and ends...
Time:
2 hours for dent in hood
7 hours frame work (bent/kinked sub-frame)
6 hours paint and prep and blend
Mind you, after all this. I fixed the bumper (kinda, it was beyond repair and still is distorted and drives me nuts), fixed the fender (have since replaced with a perfect one), got used lights, never did the frame work or fixed the hood (bug guard covers the dent  )... I've been a bodyman for about 15 years now and I know what I can do it for, but for the everyday Joe that takes their car to the shop, the repair would be 4K with new OEM parts... The end cost for me was about $600 for parts and paint. I'm going to be ripping it all apart as soon as I get a JDM bumper and lights, so it might be a while... My Silvia was a complete different thing as is my Volvo project. I didnt drive them everyday like I do the Subie...

Alright, time for another update... I've done a bit of work in the last few months with more on the way... I updated mods list and such.
First thing... I got a broke front sway bar. Ended up replacing it with a 02-03 bar from Subaru. It was $56 bucks and 1mm bigger so I figured I couldnt lose..
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/03/IMG_4893-1.jpg
Next big thing was my JDM lights.. got a good deal by chance on Ebay... $173 shipped and in great shape with pigtails...
Before:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/07/IMG_6399-1.jpg
This was bugging the crap out of me.. My Fog light has a small crack at the top and lets water in. Took it out to drill a couple holes in the bottom so it will drain. just waiting for when I get a JDM bumper and lights...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/07/IMG_6406-1.jpg
This is the last good pic I took... My bug guard was junk so I took it off... Debating if I should get a new one of repaint the front end and leave it off...

Huh?! :smt017
As for the swaybar, I was backing out of the driveway and it just snapped! Earlier in the day I took a freeway interchange, warning speed of 35mph, at 85mph and it held! But backing out of the driveway it broke... haha.... God loves me! =)
I was told by my wholesale guy at Subaru, broke sway bars are common for BG's, but not got GT's. But he knows I beat the crap out of my poor car...
Posting pics later of my winkers... car needs a wash BAD!!!

I just got my old sub/box/amp back from a buddy I sold it to a few years agon. I dont know why, but I wanted it. I sold it to him about 3 years back for $300 and got it back for $200... Its a 1000W Kicker CVR and a 1200W Phoenix Gold amp... Ported box... bla bla... It hits hard. I'm gonna end up putting it in the Pulsar. I have a 8" sub for the GT, but no box for it yet.

Thanks! I took it almost all the way to raw plastic. It was a paint in the butt, however worth it! Funny thing is I have just as much into this as I did my S13 Silvia front end I did a few years ago! :smt017
The grill is a 1999 SUS (Sport Utility Sedan) grill. They might have had them in 98 also, but I'm not sure. It's a tall grill and it took me forever to find one, but now cant use it with the GT-B bumper... :smt022 Gonna keep it though. I might figure out a way to make it look right someday with this bumper...

You would thing so, but not as much as you would think. I got the plates for cheap for a guy in New Zealand. $78 Shipped...
The bumper.... yeah, I'm still feeling that bill...
Next is a motor... Was gonna do a USDM WRX swap, but I'm kinda curious about the H6 now... :smt024

Forgot these pics...
The GT-B Limited is a "short" grill bumper... but I did kinda get my SUS grill in. I know it wont fit when I get my frame work finished, but I have a junk OB grill I can mod to see what it will take to make it fit!
Not really too bad! Still bugs me so it will need to be fixed..

Yeah, I saw the first set at like $200+ shipped and thought that was dumb! I talked to the guy when it didnt sell on Ebay. He had them listed for $150 shipped with the plastics. They come right off and the plastics are close enough to the same.

Yep! I need to redo the adhesive, but yeah it's simple to install. Just some 3M trim tape should work fine.

Finally got the pics off my phone...
I only have a couple showing how much work went into the JDM Limited GT-B bumper, but here they are...
What I couldnt get with a DA sander, I did by hand... I think I sanded for a couple days, then gave it about 5 coats of primer and about 2 blocking sessions tpo make sure all, chips and what not were all cleaned up. The bumper had some nasty re-paints before. It had been painted 3 times, so I took most of it down to raw plastic where I needed to.

Doesn't have to. As long as he sanded it, it will bond with the primer, sealer etc...

I have seen some bad stuff happen with paint remover and it had mud work done before so I just treated it like any other body panel. I had it sanded in 180 grit so the primer/paint in not going anywhere...
That is a clean 164! I almost had one once, but I'm a 122/140 kinda guy.
As for lowering it, I have a set of H&R's in the shop, just didnt want to do it before I do the HG's or the frame work.
Buy that grill!
I'm thinking about it... But I still like my SUS one... It does give it move of aggressive look though!

I used some left over PPG DC4000 clear I had from painting my Silvia years back... WAY too good for a set of wheels like this, but I'm out of my cheap clear... Oh well, better to use it now then for it to go bad.
I do love this clear though! It's meant for doing complete paint jobs without a bake booth. It melts together well and almost never runs and if it does, you tried to make it run! haha...
I have a line on a set of used 17's from a friend, but they only have 20% or so. I really dont want to do 2 set of tires in less then 6 months. I'm just gonna bust my butt to get a nice set hoping here in the next couple weeks. I'm also having Brad (Red85celica) mount them for me if it's possible. He's good at it...

I'll get some nice new pics next week hopefully. I'm waiting for some wheel spacers then I can drive her again. Thats why there is a doughnut on the rear... haha...
Took pics when doing them so I'll see about doing a write-up. I did a couple things to prolong the life and also made it easy for removal later when I do paint...

Well, the tires are 215/55/17 (too tall, too wide combined)... they rub on the bottom of the strut seats on the rear. I needed cheap tires to roll on ($20). I cant afford $500 for new rubber right now, so this is the temporary fix till I get 205/45/17...

Ah, I have 215/45/17s on mine and they clear fine, incase you want to go a little wider than the 205. I spent too much on my tires, but I wanted them that day and only really had that day to get some so I just went for them.

nikolaus.conrad

Probably the mounting bolts under the rear bumper cover, since the SUS bumper is essentially the same as the Outback. I haven't mounted my rear GT bumper to my Outback yet but when I do I'll let you know of any difficulties and differences. Good lord, I love that grille....
When are you getting a new steering wheel?
Dead91silvia

One thing I love about the grill, no one else has the SUS rocked on a GT...
I keep thinking about a new steering wheel, but half the ones I find are worn out, or over priced. I dont mind it, much.
It's funny, even on my Silvia I never got around to a new steering wheel. Even though I had a motor swap, front end swap, new seats, wheels, suspension I never got around to a new steering wheel... haha

Man, there's nothing better than a freshly detailed car. The smell of freshly conditioned leather, the tracks left on carpet from a hot water extractor, steam cleaned engines with a matte shine in all the right places.
Well... OK, I can think of some things that are better, but they're NSFW.

I just finished wiring my side light in mt fenders and also my city lights... Go figure I put everything back together and the right side head light burns out! Errrrr........ Oh well...
I tapped into the wiring for the running light/turn sig for the lights. Not sure if its over loading the circuit, but I dont think so . I guess I'll find out... haha.... Not sure if I like the city lights though. I have my head lights on 24/7 anyway...

I tapped into the side marker for the city lights. I actually dont like them that much, but I guess they are ok. I drive with my lights on 24/7 so it's more like a power drain...
If I remember right, city lights are on when you have your running lights on. The JDM fogs are the ones that have the light that turn on when your using your turn signal.
I'll get a video when I wire my fogs up.

Dead91silvia

No, the fogs are going to be all independent. The way the JDM cars are, they stay on with the signal, I dont feel like doing that much wiring and also would just rather have them on all the time if I want.

Well, I finally got around to installing my new door panel. Makes the car feel a little more new.
Initially the color was a bit off, but when I detailed my car yesterday, the color became much closer, so I have a feeling it might have just been a mold release agent or something... This makes the inside of the car feel so much more new... Might do the Passenger side next if I get the extra funds!

No...the weather is not the same! Lowest it will get is 20-30's in the winter and maybe a few dustings of snow that all melt in, at the most...2-4 days. When it's just raining outside and 40-50 degrees...it makes me happy to not have to deal with snow, sleet, ice and SALT!

Winters are just rainy on the west side of the mountains, snowy as all hell (great for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and snow wheeling) in the mountains and once you drop down the east side of the mountains there will still be some snow and it slowly goes away and just stays colder in central Washington. That's why I stay on my side of the mtns! :P
Summer! Well...it's a toss up but, in a nutshell summer starts here JUST AFTER July 4th almost without fail. When the sun comes out and youve got the Olympics to the West, Cascades to the East and good ole Mt. Rainier to the South....it blows your mind every time. It will be nice, dont get me wrong but...clouds, a bit of rain and stuff...cant really rely on the weather until 7/4 to early-to-mid September and even after that October and November are still getting up to 50-70ish. Usually no major rain until November-ish.

I have so many more shots like these from drives and hikes... Camping is massive and you cant leave out that the coast is only a couple hours from Seattle, Oregon is about 3 hours, and Canada is about the same. Eastern WA is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, we have a rain forest on the far north west side, and tons of other awesome things about this place.
Oh, VERY little salt on the roads! They just started using it a couple years ago, but not like you guys! It's a salt/sand mix, but only if big storms are on the way or here. Most logical people hate it... but thats about it.
If your looking at Lakewood, thats just south of Tacoma and Tacoma is about 30-40 minutes south of Seattle.

So last night on my way home, I gun it going up an on-ramp... I swear my bottom end is getting tired just because it sounds like death. Sounds like my piston slap is getting worse and like my rod bearings are getting a little worn. Not too unexpected for a motor with 277K on it.
I'm starting to look into a swap. Have been thinking of a 2.5 from an XT or GT. Just so I can retain my 2.5GT badge. Or maybe even looking at seeing about doing a N/A mild build on an EJ25D.
I have a few extra parts sitting around...
-N/A EJ25D bottom end (1997 I think)
-Phase II EJ25 single cam heads (from the old motor from my 2000 GT)
Maybe I should just start looking for a rolled XT Forester, GT, or something... I just dont have the money for it. :-(

You could always throw your spare bottom end in when the time comes, and keep saving for the XT swap.

Went for a photo shoot yesterday on Mt Rainier... Much over due...
Let me know what you guys think.
Looks beautiful, I really miss that state, is Chinook on the north side of Rainier?
I never made it off Stevens road whenever I drove through there, yeah that ended up not being a shortcut from tri-cities back to Tacoma. :smt017

Yep, it's just to the North and connects with with another pass if you want to go south.

Anything thats fun to drive, I take here. Silvia and I spent many days up here, some for White Lightning. I dont think I had a chance to take the Wagonator up here though. I sold it before the pass opened. The drive is fun, the hiking is excellent, and most of the time traffic is low. No big trucks are aloud on the pass also!
I even drove my rock crawler up over the pass a number of times for doing some wheeling on the other side.

So my car got rear ended this last Sunday on the way back from a car show at my church...
My buddy was driving it and I was driving my GMC with the Pulsar on the trailer.
He got hit kinda had right on the bumper... Thank God he's ok. The car is fixable, but will need a new bumper, re-bar, and seat brackets. The kid that hit it didnt have insurance! :smt013
Hit on the left rear... Notice the gaps on the door and that the mud guard is push much closer to the tire. All the gapes were PERFECT before!

Not fixed yet. Thats why I took the pics at the angle I did. I have the parts, now it's the time. :-( Sadly the new bumper is even the right color, just has some nicks and scratches.

Well, as Yamazaki just reminded me, the wheels is from a 3rd gen JDM Lancaster. So yeah, it works no problem. Just unbolt and bolt back up. Plugs are the same and everything! The airbag is from Yama's BE SUS. Dont have the expendable cash for the MOMO one yet.

Hey man! I was wondering if I would see you on here or not! I hope the Wagonator is treating you well!
The motor I installed was a stock replacement, so nothing crazy there. Looks of cool parts to get for it though! Mrlancaster and Eslider both have some good looking BH wagons. Also take a look at Yamazaki's Blitzen replica and S402. Lots of good ideas for things to change and make it yours. :smt023

I used a deferral about 11 years ago. I have used a lawyer in Tacoma a few times, but they couldnt get the last one off back in the day. I went over this ticket with someone els and they said this one would be damn near impossible to fight. Bringing the rear bumper cover in the shop to start fixing the little imperfections and such and get it painted sometime soon.

So after looking at the cover some more, I decided to just bolt it on and hopefully come across a better cover in my travels. It has a little bit of distortions I dont like.
I did a lot of cleaning since I had the rear end apart and also polished out the parts. So it doesnt look that bad! Much better then the cracked cover and bent bar. Took a little time swapping the mud guards and lip since the new bumper had nether.

The left is pulled down and buckled a little. All the gaps are off and makes things not work as they once did. I have a slight dimple in the rail right in front of the rear suspension crossmember. I saved the old crappy bar for the pull I will be doing.

-stripping the trunk to fix leaks and installing new trunk interior
-re-building rear suspension.
-frame work
-possible 5 speed swap
and I have a couple other things up my sleeve.
She will be ready for the road at the middle or end of summer for WCSS 15 and for my Church car show, but with improvements.

I decided since it's gonna be sitting for a couple months I would take the Head Unit out and put it in the wagon... And come to find out the battery is dead... :smt017 Thats a new development...

I feel your pain. Try a wagon carrying about 200 lbs of crap and another human who is overweight through the Rockies. Oh and and 2.2L under the hood. :smt021 I had it floored and it wouldn't break 40 mph up the mountains.

Trying to get things wrapped up for WCSS... not gonna have the 5 speed and turbo stuff on for it, but I did get the dog leg plastic trim shaved and skirts are painted and ready to install... Still need to paint the doglegs though.
Also will be installing new lights maybe today... Was trying to get the correct connectors for the headlights though. Guess that will wait.
Pics to come later. :smt023

You don't have any plans on selling the jdm headlights do you, I know this other BD they'd look great on.

heh heh... I did the night pics to mess with you guys.
I'll get some more pics after she is detailed for WCSS. She's pretty dirty right now.
The Projectors will be stored for now. I'm still trying to decide if I like the Morettes.

Well.... yeah... I'm still not sure I like them yet though. I'm a fitment kinda guy and they dont fit for crap to me. I'm sure other people would not have a problem with it.
I'm NOT selling the projectors, so these might just come back off. I would trade them for a rear JDM BD glass if someone had one.

Well hey, who's not up for mixing it up from time to time? :P
And no such thing as glass lights for JDM BG/BD's to my knowledge. My old BG had glass lights, but that was AUDM, and it was a seperate indicator lens. Please don't tell me they made glass projecotrs :s

LOL... No, the rear window with a wiper. As far as I know they didnt make glass projectors, but that would have been cool!
The Morettes are glass. I have one problem with them though. How d you wire them? They are gheto wired right now. I wanna do it the right way, but I dont know what wires go for what.

Personally, not a fan of Morrettes. But I will reserve judgment until I see daytime pics from different angles.

The skirts made it about 2 inches lower in the middle and about 3 at the ends... I scrapped on in my driveway!
And Yama, I'm not sold on the Morette's and looking at it in person... haha... They look kinda cool, but the OEM projectors also look good.
I might end up backing the projectors and make them a little darker to make the car look a little more... evil... haha :smt005
