I'm new here, I didn't do a introduction thread, but I will.

However I need help from the Legacy guru's.

My girlfriends mother just gave her a 1997 Legacy Outback Wagon auto.

It currently has a newer engine in it (unsure of mileage) but its running rough.

From what I understand it has a new fuel filter and plugs and wires.

Its fine at idle, but when driving, mainly under WOT it misses, it surges in power, and shifts very hard. Some times even if I floor it up hill, it won't down shift. I have to let off and the jam the pedal to the floor again to get it to shift.

I think part of this problem is the TPS. But I'm not sure. Plus I don't think the surging in power and the missing could be from that either.

Does anyone have any input? I'm new to the Subaru motors, but I've always wanted a Leggy wagon. Now I just need to get this one running right.

Thanks in advance!!

If you can hook a multimeter to the TPS, you should be able to read the output voltage between 0 and 5 volts. If not, then that's your problem. Otherwise, this sounds like a bad ignition coil.

I'll do that and get back to you guys. Is the TPS easy enough to change? I'm a fairly competent mechanic so I'm not scared, although I've never worked on a Subie so its all new!!

It's just a couple of screws but the tricky part is getting it lined up correctly for calibration. Really you should have a Scantool that will give you the ECU's reading of the throttle so you can line it up properly.
