Hey guys. I've been in and outta autozone and advanced looking at a few different mufflers they got. Mostly everyone here has spent some serious dough on their set-ups. I'm looking for something affordable and subtle. I just want a little more growl behind my foot. Does anyone have any experience with just replacing their muffler with something outta the parts store. I don't want a ricer fart can sound so I'd like some peoples opinions before I go out and buy. Any preferences between magnaflow. Flowmaster. Or any other versions they have there.

Magnaflow has a nice rumble, flowmaster has a tin type coffee can sound...like a mustang exhaust.

Any particular series of magnaflow? And it's 2 1/4 piping on a 04 legacy 35th anniversary right?

A lot of them sound ricey. All I'm doing is replacing the muffler. I don't want to do anything about the cat etc.

Stock system is like 1 7/8". You aren't probably going to find an aftermarket muffler that size, but if you buy a 2" muffler an exhaust should can probably put it on with a reducer.

I run a full Magnaflow system on mine. Sounds fine, not too loud, even with the header.

Flowmasters are chambered mufflers, so they have a more metallic sound that doesn't really suit a 4cyl. Unless you get one of their giant truck mufflers (which wouldn't fit on your car anyway) they are pretty loud.

another vote against the flowmaster, my brother in alw tried one on his impreza sounded like total crap and was no quieter than a strait pipe

Magnaflows aren't bad...I'm partial toward BORLA though, do I own any type of aftermarket exhaust?NOPE....my cousin has dual exhuast on her grandprix gtp and the borla gives a nice low growl, then on my uncles 39chevy sedan with a trick corvette enngine it has borla too which can shoot out the back pipes or flip a door and the exhaust closes to come out the sides and it sounds AMAZING no rasp/pop/ting sound at all...then my buddies SS silverado has borla too and it has a great mean/deep/barry white type sound lol...just my opinion so check into some too cuz I would like to get something too at an affordable price so ill be checkin to see what you've come up with

I've used Borla on previous vehicles and they work very nicely as well. Both have similar warranties and are almost the same design. I went with Magnaflow on the Subaru because I was able to find everything I needed from one store (including a cat) for much less cost than I could find the Borla stuff.

I got all my parts from justmagnaflow.com.

Part numbers 53035, 10425, 11255, and 35177. Then had a local shop weld it all up for me.

I swapped my stock muffler with a guy on craigslist for his magnaflow (a round one, don't know the model) I had to pay $125 for the swap at the shop, nothing for the muffler itself. It sounds great though. Just gives the car a little more voice

did you guys running the magnaflow feel any loss in power at all? particually in the low end?

A freer flowing exhaust would shift the power curve over to the right (ie. more power in higher revs), and may or may not be noticeable as lower end power "loss."

I vote Borla. I picked up just the muffler (Pro-XS), and had an exhaust shop weld it onto a WRX axelback.

Nope. As long as you pick the correct size pipe, you can get good flow without causing any low end power problems.

yea, ive read up on the borla and the borla knock offs, basically the same thing

my friend has them on his subie, sounds pretty sweet

just expensive

hmm what to do.. i dont want to spend over like 100-150 bucks.. :smt017:

i can do the welding myself so i can cut that outta the expense

If you just want it to sound good bash out all the baffling in the muffler and put it back on (stealth strait piping) with the stock header to muffler its not that loud :)
