I recently purchased a 97 Legacy L with about 156k miles, no mods, stock. Got a check engine light and got it scanned at Autozone today and it is a P0136.

I have searched both sl-i and nasioc and some solutions were to replace the rear O2 sensor or check the wiring.

The salesperson at autozone said the OEM rear sensor is 99 dollars.

Getting the car registered and insured has my funds low.

I wanted to know what the cheapest way to fix this problem.

Thank You.

run it for a while till you save up enough dough. I have the same code and have been running it for about 4 months and 3k miles. Just waiting to get the cash to install my new system and o2 sensors. also buy the piece off amazon.com about $20 or so cheaper.

Right, this is not a critical problem and you can put it off if you have to. You can save a few bucks by getting a Bosch generic O2 sensor, but you will have to splice and wire it up yourself instead of just plug and play.

actually the plug and play Bosch sensor is about $20 cheaper and the one for splicing is about $40 cheaper.

i ran mine almost 6 months, 4k miles before i replaced it. Good thing about subarus is they can work through most any problems.

Rear O2 sensor is only for monitoring catalyst efficiency on these cars...very minor problem unless you have emissions testing.
