4EAT Destroyed?

So today I was driving my 97 BK, on a straight road, going 40, and I try to give a little more gas, and my speedometer and RPMs go up, but my car goes nowhere and I hear the transmission grinding. At this point, I realize its a problem, pull over and inspect. Fluid level good, not dripping, the AT Oil Temp light was not on, but I could feel the heat on the gearshift. I proceeded to drive in granny mode to my girlfriends house, because I figured it overheated for some reason and I should let it cool and then carefully drive home to inspect it.

I stop to turn on to the road my house is on and I hear the transmission idling and making a grinding noise, I pull in slowly, and I go to shift into park, and I hear a grinding, spinning noise, and park no longer serves a function. Neither does any other gear. What happened? It cant have overheated, the light would have come on. Is it just an old transmission? (175.5k miles) I havent heard of this happening on a 4EAT. Any insight would be great.


TL;DR: Heard grinding/slipping, checked fluid, no warning light, careful drive home, shift into park and spinny grindy noise, no gears do anything anymore, park doesnt hold the car still. Insights?

Sounds like you ate some clutch packs. Or you destroyed your front diff and your center clutch finally let go, so you're just freewheeling your transmission.

Hard to tell.... Drain the fluid and look at the color. Is it burnt and black? If yes, pull the pan and filter. Bits of clutch in the filter and pan, and magnetic crap stuck to the magnet? Then you probably blew up some clutches. Time for a rebuild. If not, I'd start looking at diffs.
