Would this be a easy "plug and play" radio for my 97 Legacy?

hmm, I was skeptical when I read the title, but looking at the radio...it looks like a double DIN, and the wiring harness looks to be the same.
It would mount up fine, I believe, but you would have to verify that the wiring harness works with your 97. (ie: dimmer line might be a little different or something like that).
I believe the WRX/Impreza/Legacy/Forester wiring harnesses for the radio have all been the same through the years, but I don't know about the 05 Legacy...
It would be great to know. Do some research, contact the dealership, or ask an audio shop, they should have a reference with part #'s for the wiring harness adapters. If the adapters are the same, this would work.

I would NOT pay $260 for a stock deck. You can go out and buy a MP3 CD player and a set of speakers for that much.

yeah, the price is steep.
Look at www.eclipse-web.com (http://www.eclipse-web.com)
eclipse decks are friggin' awesome!!! Sound is awesome, features are what most are looking for, not too much uneccesary flash.

Well if you really like the stock cd from the new legacies check for used stuff on ebay. people usually sell the stockers at a decent price when they upgrade theirs. but yeah 260 is alot for that. I have an Alpine cd/mp3 deck and when you make an mp3 cd you can put like 100 songs on a cd so there is no need for a 6 disc changer or anything. but its all personal preference.
and I would imagine the harness is the same the 1995-2004 use the same Metra Vehicle Wiring Harness (80-8901) from circuit city. they have no listings for the 05-06 models yet though. I would imagine subaru didnt change the harness though

Thanks for the info. I agree the price is steep but would really like the double din look. I might just go for a stocker out of a WRX since the price looks to be a little more sane.

they make aftermarket double DINs too, if you really just like the look. Check out circuit city, they have a few, also look panasonic, jvc, alpine, etc's websites to see what they offer.
always consider all the alternatives, you might find something else you like :)
