:smt007 hello sl-i! im just posting some random pics of my brighton. it is my 7th subaru. it has 280k on the clock, and what appears to be a jdm replacement engine. it was purchased for 500$ because the trans pops out of fourth, and, as i found out on the way home, half way up a mountain, the clutch was poorly installed and is failing. given that it is indeed a brighton, its gloriously stripped down, and in brighton tradition, the stereo has been removed, prior to my purchase. the body is in good shape, and overall in better shape than the mileage would suggest. i :smt007 the crank windows and the lack of options, as this makes the car lighter and also makes upgrading fun :smt005 . subaru's are my favorite car brand, and hopefully next week or so i will be receiving a second legacy, 96 sedan, which runs great but is rusty. i dont mind the rust, as i look forward to fixing it. :smt020

on to the pics

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/3003/1002209q.th.jpg (http://img707.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1002209q.jpg)

it runs fantastic and the a/c is a champ. just gotta sort out this trans issue. and even though it has a k&n filter, and fat ngk wires, it still feels a bit gutless. might be the clutch, time will tell :)

like everyone else, i have plans for the car, but in order to avoid overly grand statements, im going to take it one step at a time, and try to put together a good handling, peppy, and clean looking wagon, since i plan on driving it year round, ESPECIALLY in the winter :smt002

seems like the clutch springs are dying. in neutral, the arm that the clutch cable attaches too wiggles back and forth. :smt010 its ok though, its an excuse to buy new parts. i think when the engine was replaced the flywheel was not resurfaced. anywho its mobile about town, but its noisy. may score a new trans while i have it off.. :smt017 not sure. the ratcheting mechanism on the ebrake is dead. not sure why but it's got the ummm... "drifter mod" so now when i park i have to stuff a window crank under it :smt011 thinkin about getting some billet window cranks too might as well, plastic from the mid 90's doesn't do well with time

untill next time :smt020

looks like a great base for mods, and I believe its wired up for most of the features that came on the L models.
hahah. I know how you feel with the ebrake, but mine was missing the button so it wouldn't ratchet (fixed it shortly after). one day I came out to leave and my car had rolled across the parking lot into a grassy field, luckily it didn't hit anyones car. I swore I put it in first. lol

lol i hope that doesn't happen with my car :smt016

i have been reviewing the clutches available to me and have narrowed it down, most likely to an exedy stock replacement with the daikin pressure plate. it's not very expensive, and it's we'll built. it's what i had on my justy  i want to swap out my trans, but have yet to locate an affordable replacement unit. prolly gonna snout sleeve the new one.

i had a good shot on the mountain with my hood up, looking all dejected, but my camera has issues and decided that i ddnt need it after all :smt018 so, in the tradition of the great european masters of the 17th century, i have rendered the events of that day with my own hand, hoping to capture the essence of humanities' struggle to find happiness

Why? Photobucket is way better, less pop-up junk, bigger resolution and faster because it has less junk.

update: IT'S clutch time! i have it up in the air at the garage and were stuffing a clutch in it. ordering an exedy for it tonight or tomorrow. i'll post pics soon, gotta take em though. the keeper for the shift bushing was loose, so im going to locktite that. all the bushings look solid, so that is a relief. i have a feeling i have the bearing slop of death, but since at the moment, i do not have a new trans, and cannot afford the extra $ for the snout kit, im going to look at it and see if i can come up with a different solution... :smt017

im pretty creative, so i'll use my car as the test mule, to see if there is a solid answer thats not 150 bones (which is welll worth it, but i have to have my sled dog ready for teh snowz)

thinking about filling in the snout groove with the tig welder and grinding the weld down, and smoothing it out. have a tig laying about at the shop, so it might be the free solution im hoping for, the only issue i see is that i may not make it round enough or somethign and cause poor performance/FAIL.

i found out that i have new front shocks on there too, as well as a new set of rear axles :smt023

i'm hoping to take a can of degreaser and some paint to the undercarrage to make it a bit more boss-um. and hopefully once i get this thing back in and tightend properly 4th gear will behave a tad better. i want to do a trans rebuild, as i have access to the proper tooling and documentation, this go around it's just not in the forecast.

pics tomorrow - sorry if it seems like im rambling, im tired. need sleep now ZzzZZzzzzzZZZz :coffee:

tried to load pics, but computer at work sucks. good news. it appears that the axles in f and r, have been replaced :smt023 . as well as the front shocks it would seem :smt023 . also, dual port motor, for the win :smt007 :smt007 ! tip on the muffler is coming off, so i will need to tack it back on. all in all it's been revealing to take it apart. i'll try and post the pics i took today, tonight.

Clutch is here. the eagle has landed! one small step for the ebay shipper, one giant leap for my subaru. i'll post pics tonight. if i remember.. anyhwo, all thats left is to pull off the flywheel, and get it surfaced, and change the rms, while the trans is off. then its back in bid-nuss :smt005

edit: Rear main seal has arrived, and the flywheel is out for resurfacing till late today/early tomorrow, Lord willing.

im so excited! though im the only one i thinks  who cares, i :smt007 my subaru!

also, my cat has moved on from my pipe tobacco, to some mystery plant in the yard :smt017 . after i went and mowed it, he started licking my shoes, then my foot, then he bit me :smt013 . then he attacked my brothers shoes (he helped with the yard), and started rolling around like he was on drugs or something  . since then, he has been camping the door to run out side and eat said mystery plant. it's behind a rather large bush, so i cant make out what it is, but he's been trippin' every day since. still my friendly, somewhat maniacal cat, until you get near the door, thats when he gets "the itch"...

yay! I love getting new stuff for the subie!
Make sure the inspection plate by the rear main isn't leaking too. I thought my rear main was leaky, turned out it was just that stupid plate!

And your cat sounds ridiculous lol

he is ridiculous :smt005 inspection hole? the one near the top o the trans? i'll check it, how does it leak? :smt017 im not being a turd, i just can't visualize it. if it's a'leakin, i'll fix it.

regarding my cat's apparent drug induced hysteria :smt119 :smt043 : might be cat nip, im not sure if it grows up here, but i'll be pokin 'round the yard this weekend, and i'll be cross referencing the odd plants i find with the cat and the internet until i find the culprit :smt117 .

edit: fly wheel complete, picking it up hopefully at lunch  going for reassembly today. prolly finish next tuesday, lol

things can take a while here in la la land. BUT! we got-er done. IT'S ALIVE! :smt036 my trans is junk, but the brighton is moving under it's own power, tagged and ready to rock. i have already put it's royal wagon-nes to work and dragged home a new box spring, while having a hatch full of groceries, and a car full of ppl :smt023 . *wipes tear of joy*, no pics or vid yet, since i cant find my stinkin camera charger, but there will be vids and pics, if i can find my charger, Lord willing.

thoughts: subaru's clutch jobs are easy  , the local machinist if a fly wheel artist  , and i need a new trans, or a manual tranny rebuild kit :smt009 . after the install i had a hard time with the fluid, it seems i was leaking it from somewhere. i added what was lost, in the form of lucas oil stabilizer, leak stopped. says it can work, and the transmission is pretty much shot anyway, so i figured i would test mule myself :smt017 , keep my transfer case in your thoughts and prayers (and me too, i dont want it to go on me, in the snow, lol). 4th gear? who needs that anyway. and im sure that strange sound is just....something...coming...from the ..trans.

who cares, it drives! :smt007 WIN! :smt023

other news from the wagon wars, i added floor mats, replaced the wipers, bought my oil change supplies (trying to change today), chem tooled my fuel tank, topped off all the fluids, took it to the over priced car wash around the way, and then hand waxed it in the cold cold night. also scored a fresh box of outdoor breeze air freshener. great for soobs, smells good with aging soob interior, and mixed with the odor of say....burning oil, it still smells pretty good. it's a staple in the junkerxl subaru check list : 1 spare drive axle, i jug of oil, small tool kit, 22mm socket, meguire's natural shine, sea foam, outdoor breeze air freshener, subaru wrench 42 (claw hammer), and last but not least - love, it's what makes a subaru, a subaru. :smt005

on the psycho cat: he has made numerous escape attempts, and i have yet to identify the offending cat drugs. in retailiation for my continued efforts to stop his dive into drug addiction, he has begin walking in on me during my morning "pressure relief dumps" and harassing me until he gets a saucer of milk. i tried ignoring him, but it would go on for days. so i decided to pick my battles and gave the victory to the cat. it's a compromise (dont judge me :smt019 ). i still have to watch over my shoulder when i go outside, he still has that "look" in his eyes :smt028

foot note: i hit some corners with my box spring strapped to the wagon. it was boss. :smt023

update, car runs good, been driving the snot out of it. wish i had some better tires b/c these roads are begging me to drive them, but i have to take it easy a bit on the tight corners. i miss 4th gear terribly on the steep 60 mph grades, but im not too bothered by it, i'll just try and replace the trans sooner or later. after changing the gear box oil out, and removing the pile of metal shavings that came with it, from my hand, it been shifting pretty well but 4th is pretty well destroyed. strangely the other gears seem to be doing ok, although i have a small leak from the trans case somewhere. i plan on flushing the box again next month and each month after that till i get my new trans. motor is running like a champ, and thankfully, there not really anything to report. i believe now, that i have a bad mount of some kind, maybe a motor mount? when i shift the car has a tendency to rock pretty good, if i dont hit the gears juuuuust right. ddnt see anything wrong with the trans mount, go fig. have a flasher relay for the 3rd brake light i plan on installing soon, and i patched up my busted center taillight section with red duct tape  it's a 10 footer. i want to do a wrx swap. might attempt that this year, but i want to sort out the sedan first, so i have something to drive around. it's running but has a wonky temp sensor making it drive strangely, and the trans has some death slip that i need to address.

the cat has stopped his insanity, but it's frozen over and rained since my last update so it may have washed out the scent of cat crack from the air. i still watch my back at the doors, because he may be trying to lull me into a false sense of security.

I love how each update of the car comes with an update of your cat LOL
Sounds like you are making progress though. And a WRX swap would be awesome , I say you should do it. it would be an awesome sleeper

JunkerXL

im considering leaving the body stock for a while after the swap, till i get tired of losing traction all day, then i'll have to upgrade the rims, and from there i might as well take care of the rest, lol. i found a proper sti swap for 2k, but my sedan took a duce last night :smt013 and i want to get that sorted first. might be spring before i get moving with that, what with the snow i'll be living under for a few months

the cat is back at it, by the way, last night, he proved that he was indeed waiting for me to let my guard down. i turned my back on him for a second while i was getting in from work, and when i turned back around there he was staring out the door with that look in his eyes. he's drunk on the nip :smt030 im going to have to have an intervention. i just have to find some of his "friends" but given his generally antisocial nature, that will be a challenge in itself... :smt009

guess i'll post about rusty's troubles now... :smt019
