cv joint?

my rides an 04 legacy 35th anniversary edition.

so everything runs and drives fine

....except for a clicking noise when im driving striaght

i know both the outter boots on either side up front are ripped

i know cvs pop and click when the wheel is completely cocked but when i cock my wheel i dont hear the noise

when im going anywhere from 15mph till i get on the highway and the engine drowns the noise out i can hear a click click click which seems to speed up as i go faster.

but nothing when im in a lot and do circles...

over the last week the clicking has gotten a little louder and i want to find the problem before it blows up in my face

any ideas guys?

You might try putting it on stands and turning the wheels by hand...

Does it sounds like is coming from a specific side? Is it just in the front or just in the back? Both?

front, and no, i havnt gotten it up on the lift yet, ill try that at school tomorrow, what am i looking for?

replace your axels. they need to be replaced anyway, and may just fix your problem.

some axels are known to click while going fwd and not while turning. replace axels.

hmm, yea ive never heard CVs clicking going forwards.. itll get worse the longer i wait i suppose lol, last night i did complete circles in each direction and still nothing. the boots have been torn for like the last 8thousand miles lmao... thats y im surprised



but, yea, i was planning on it this week.. i do drive somewhat hard, i dont spin the tires or anything but i do accelerate moderately quickly lol..

ive read on here that most pple bash the autoszone and rebuilt axles, and ive also looked at some of the higher priced ones..

i should probably replace all four? the cars 6 years old and only has54k on it, i bout it with 32! not even six months ago

which tells me it had to sit a lot..

the rear boots are dry but not cracked yet

should i replace all of them while im under there? i gotta do rear pads and rotors anyway i just dont know if its worth spending the extra 100-200 bucks

i pay dealer price over at advanced auto (which is 50%off :grin: ) should i just go with all new parts store level parts or should i upgrade to something a little more expensive?

is there any happy medium between the parts store and the heavyduty raceing CVs?

What do you mean by the rear boots are dry - did you somehow inspect it to see if there was still grease in them?

Where do you live? Try to find a quality axle remanufacturer - the Autozone stuff is of questionable quality and still expensive. A rebuilt axle shouldn't cost anymore than $50. No need for fancy equipment there, Subarus don't make enough power to worry about the stress on 1 of 4 axles :)

well, when i say dry, i mean the boot it self. like an old tire, gets dry and cracked. none of the cracks go completely through the boot like the front. the front ones are completely torn through

i live in massachesetts, on the coast, im also in RI quite a bit

what exactly do they do? just rebuild and repack the ones i got right now?
